Gnashing and Grinding in Leeds Central Can Cause Further Dental Problems

Monday, March 31st, 2014

459343_blogTeeth grinding can keep you awake at night, but that’s often not the only side-effect. Grinding the teeth can also cause dental problems, as well as jaw pain and temporomandibular joint disorder.

Bruxism is the medical name for teeth grinding or clenching. It is a common problem, which tends to be related to anxiety and stress. If you grind your teeth, it’s often your partner who is kept awake at night, as most people grind their teeth subconsciously when they are asleep. As well as interrupting a night’s sleep, bruxism can also cause damage and wear to the teeth, as well as straining the muscles around the jaw and contributing to headaches and even migraines and earache.

We can help!

Most cases of bruxism are linked to stress, but there are other possible causes, including problems with the bite, which prevent the teeth from sitting together properly when the jaw is relaxed. We start by identifying the cause and then finding ways to treat the problem. Stress management techniques are often recommended in tandem with dental treatments, including wearing a protective guard during the night to prevent the teeth from clashing together. Orthodontic treatment may be an option when there are issues with the bite.

If you’re sick of hearing about sleepless nights and you want to do something about teeth grinding, we can help. Our treatments will enable you and your partner to enjoy a good night’s sleep without the worry of waking up with a headache or tooth pain.

LS1 Onlays Can Provide Support for Recently Fractured Teeth

Sunday, March 30th, 2014

2839654_blogIf you have a small cavity, a filling is the best option, but if you’ve fractured your tooth or you have a larger cavity, an inlay or onlay may be the best option.

Inlays and onlays are designed to strengthen the teeth, so that you are able to fulfil day to day activities, such as chewing your food, with ease. They also help to lower the risk of injury in the future and they can have aesthetic benefits, as they are often colour matched to your natural tooth.

What is an onlay?

An onlay is a type of restoration, which is placed on top of the fractured tooth to make it stronger. An onlay is often described as the mid-ground between a filling and a dental crown. Onlays are able to restore the tooth without the need for a full crown.

Fractured teeth can be painful, but they are also problematic because the tooth is weakened and this means that the risk of injury is greater. An onlay helps to reduce this risk and also improves the look of the affected tooth.

Onlays are custom-made by dental technicians in a laboratory to fit the individual tooth perfectly.

If you have a fractured tooth, we can help to restore your smile and free you from pain; call us today to book your appointment!

You Can End Your Dental Phobia Nightmare Right Here In Leeds

Saturday, March 29th, 2014

4361359_blogDental phobia is a profound fear of going to the dentist or having dental treatment, which may prevent patients from seeing their dentist on a regular basis. Phobias make people feel very nervous, anxious and uneasy and sometimes, patients feel so scared that they avoid having dental treatment for prolonged periods of time. We recommend regular check-ups for all our patients to reduce the risk of oral diseases and we can help nervous patients with a range of techniques and treatments.

We understand that some people feel very anxious when they come to the surgery or even think about seeing a dentist and we have experience in treating patients with dental phobia. One treatment we often use to help patients to feel more relaxed is sedation.

About sedation

Sedation is a treatment, which involves using sedative medication to make patients feel calm and reduce anxiety. We often recommend sedation for patients with dental phobia because it helps to prevent them from feeling nervous before they have treatment, as well as during the actual procedure. If patients know they are having sedation and they will not feel any pain or remember anything about the procedure, this makes treatment much less daunting and patients will feel much more confident when the day of their treatment arrives.

Sedation makes patients feel drowsy and relaxed without any of the risks of general anaesthetic and most people have very little memory of what happened during the procedure. After sedation, patients are able to go home with the help of a friend or relative and the effects of the drugs will wear off completely within the next 24 hours.

If you suffer from dental phobia and you had given up hope of overcoming your fears, we can help to change this and enable you to have treatment and take advantage of the benefits of regular dental checks.

Chipped Teeth and Gaps: Let Cosmetic Bonding Work Wonders at Heartland Leeds

Friday, March 28th, 2014

3177562_blogChipped teeth don’t usually cause any pain, but they can affect the look of your smile and even the smallest chip can affect your confidence. If you’ve been hiding your smile away because you don’t want people to see your chipped tooth, we have the perfect solution for you. Cosmetic bonding is a quick, painless treatment, which can repair chips and improve the look of the teeth to create a beautiful smile.

What is cosmetic bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is a procedure used to improve the aesthetic of the smile by making minor changes to the teeth. It is commonly used to repair chipped teeth and worn teeth, but it can also be used to make the gaps between two teeth smaller. Often, the changes that are brought about during this procedure are very minor, but the impact on the look of the smile is significant and an hour in the dental chair makes a massive difference to the look of your smile.

The actual procedure involves using dental composite, a white, putty-like substance, to build up surfaces, fill in chips and close gaps. While in its putty form, composite is malleable and very versatile and your dentist will use their skill to create the best aesthetic. Once they are happy with the placement of the composite, they will use a curing light to set the material and this will make it hard. Once it has set, composite is strong and it should last for several years, although it is not quite as durable as natural tooth enamel.

The bonding process takes less than an hour, there is usually no need for anaesthetic and the results will be clearly visible as soon as your dentist has finished.

Invisalign: Our Comfortable, Discreet Treat for Leeds Patients

Thursday, March 27th, 2014

4865112_blogAre you searching for a discreet, comfortable orthodontic treatment? Have you been waiting for a more appealing alternative to traditional fixed braces? If so, the wait is over! Allow us to introduce you to Invisalign.

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment with a difference! Unlike traditional treatments, this system uses a series of bespoke removable aligners to move the teeth, creating a beautiful smile. The aligners are made from transparent plastic and they are worn in a set order with each one in position for two weeks. Invisalign aligners are removable and they should be taken out when you clean your teeth and eat. As well as making these actions easier, it also means that it is very simple to keep you’re aligners clean. The braces are also very comfortable and they don’t need to be adjusted, which is usually quite painful for patients who have fixed braces.

Invisalign is a treatment that is suitable for most patients and ideal for those who would prefer a more discreet treatment. The aligners are virtually invisible, which means that you can go through treatment without worrying about how you look or battling comments from other people.

If you have crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth and you’re desperate to find a solution, which doesn’t involve wearing highly visible braces for months on end, this could be the perfect option for you.

City Dental Leeds: Why Choose Natural Looking Dental Implants?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

2797271_blogIf you have a missing tooth or a number of missing teeth, this can affect much more than the look of your smile. Missing teeth increase the risk of oral health problems, as well as denting your confidence and making it difficult for you to eat certain foods. Thankfully, there are many treatments out there, which can help to restore full function and give you a smile worth showing off. One of our most impressive treatments is dental implants.

Dental implants are small screw-like appliances, which are made from titanium. They are inserted into the jaw bone to act as a replacement for the root part of the missing tooth. Like a tooth root, the implant supports the visible crown section of the tooth, which is replaced by a dental crown, a denture or a dental bridge. As titanium is biocompatible, it is able to integrate into the bone, providing amazing levels of stability.

One of the best things about dental implants is the aesthetics; once the restoration has been attached, the smile will look amazingly natural and you won’t be able to tell that your new tooth or teeth are different to your natural teeth. This treatment is also a long-term solution for missing teeth and it has additional benefits, including enhanced oral function, better facial aesthetics and reduced bone loss.

If you have missing teeth, this can be distressing, but we can help! Our dental implants create beautiful smiles and will enable you to speak, eat and smile with confidence in the future.

Straighter Teeth in Leeds with A Little Help from the Inman Aligner

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014

Beautifully HappyMany people need a little help to enjoy a straight, healthy looking smile and very few people are blessed with perfectly aligned teeth. With the help of some amazing innovative orthodontic treatments, we are able to create incredible looking smiles and some of our treatments work within weeks, including the Inman Aligner.

The Inman Aligner is a dream treatment for those who have been thinking about having brace sin the past, but been put off by the treatment times and the lack of visual appeal. In contrast to traditional fixed braces, this aligner works incredibly quickly and it is much more discreet than conventional train-track braces, with just a fine metal bar on show.

This treatment is ideally suited to those who have minor orthodontic issues, including mild crowding and slightly crooked teeth and it is specially designed to target the front teeth. It uses the latest technology to move the teeth rapidly, without causing any pain and the average treatment time is just 16 weeks.

If you’re looking for any downsides, you could say that it isn’t invisible like other aligners, but there is only a very fine metal bar to see and many people are willing to accept this in return for the fact that they will have a beautifully aligned smile in just 4 months. If you thought you had to wear a brace for at least a year to get the smile of your dreams, think again!

Invisible Braces for the Self-Conscious Teen

Monday, March 24th, 2014

2370471_sTeenagers are under a lot of pressure to look good these days and often the last thing they want is a set of braces. Braces have never been the coolest look but image-conscious teens will be thrilled to learn that there is now an invisible means of getting an amazing new smile. Invisalign is an incredibly popular clear brace system, which offers a specially designed treatment, Invisalign Teen, for younger patients.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative removable brace system, which offers a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional metal fixed braces. Rather than wearing a fixed brace for months, patients wear a series of specially made removable aligners, which are made from clear plastic. Each aligner is different and all are worn for a fortnight.

Invisalign Teen is the same as Invisalign but it offers additional benefits designed especially for teenagers. There are spare aligners available and the aligners are marked with coloured indicators to remind patients when to swap their brace for the next in the series.

Invisalign is a great option for younger patients who are worried about the impact of wearing a brace on their looks and what other people may say about them having treatment. These aligners are virtually invisible, they are convenient and comfortable and they will produce an amazing smile at the end of it all. Call us today to find out more!

People in Leeds Should Be Aware Of the Dangers of Sleep Apnoea

Sunday, March 23rd, 2014

758140_blog1Sleep apnoea is a condition, which causes breathing difficulties when you sleep. It can be very dangerous and potentially fatal so it is important that is it managed properly. At City Dental Leeds we understand the importance of a good night’s sleep and we can help to manage sleep apnoea effectively.

What causes sleep apnoea?

The main risk factor for sleep apnoea is being overweight or obese. Sleep apnoea is more common in men and tends to affect people over the age of 40 years old. Taking sedatives can increase the risk of sleep apnoea and drinking alcohol can make the problem worse.

What can be done for sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a serious condition, which disrupts breathing during sleep. Thankfully, there are solutions, which can help to control sleep apnoea and reduce symptoms. In cases where sleep apnoea is related to obesity, making lifestyle changes can make a massive difference; this may include losing weight, changing your diet, doing more exercise and steering clear of cigarettes and alcohol.

Another treatment option for more severe cases is breathing apparatus, which is used to help you breathe more easily during the night. A type of treatment called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is often used and it involves the individual wearing a mask during the night.

We can also offer dental appliances to help combat sleep apnoea. An appliance called a mandibular splint helps to improve breathing by holding the lower jaw in a forward position, which increases air flow by keeping the airway open.

Spotting Mouth Cancer Early In City Centre, Leeds

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014

3708143_blogWhen it comes to mouth cancer, early diagnosis is essential and we are eager to raise awareness of mouth cancer to ensure all our patients are able to spot the warning signs. Mouth cancer is a form of cancer, which has become much more common in the UK over the course of the last decade and with early diagnosis we can help to fight this deadly disease and improve survival rates.

We include a mouth cancer check in our routine check-ups and we also urge patients to take advantage of mouth cancer screening, which enables our dentists to spot the very early signs using advanced technology, which identifies changes in the oral tissue, which are visible to the naked eye.

Signs of mouth cancer

One of the reasons survival rates have stalled in the UK is poor public awareness of the symptoms of mouth cancer. Other types of cancer, such as breast, cervical and testicular cancer, have a media profile and this means that most people are familiar with the symptoms, while oral cancer is less well-known, even though it kills more people each year than cervical and testicular cancer combined. The symptoms to look out for include:

  • abnormal lumps or swellings, which may make it harder for you to swallow
  • red or white patches in the mouth
  • mouth ulcers that take a long time to heal (more than 2 weeks)
  • a persistent sore throat

Our advice is to see your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and arrange an appointment if you notice any changes in the mouth. Usually, there’s nothing to worry about, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
