Thursday, April 30th, 2015

3488681_blogIf stress is getting to you and you’re waking up with headaches or tooth pain, we can help to banish bruxism for good.

About bruxism

Bruxism is the medical name for tooth grinding or clenching, a sub-conscious action that occurs during sleep and can have significant implications for your oral and general health. In many cases, stress is believed to be a contributing factor tooth grinding. Anxiety, loose fillings and misaligned teeth can also increase the risk of bruxism.

Bruxism can harm the teeth, but it can also result in aches and pains in the head, neck, shoulders, back and jaw. It can also affect the quality of your sleep and that of the people around you.

Coping with bruxism

If you grind your teeth on a regular basis, it’s advisable to seek advice from your dentist. We can provide treatments and advice to help to reduce the risk of bruxism and improve your sleep, as well as your health.

In cases linked to stress, we are able to recommend stress and anxiety management techniques such as breathing exercises, meditation, talking therapies and exercise. We can also provide patients with custom-made bite guards, which help to prevent physical contact between the top and bottom arches of teeth.

We can also provide relief for those who suffer from bruxism as a result of loose fillings and orthodontic issues that affect the bite. Treatment options may include replacing fillings and using braces to align the teeth and jaws.

If bruxism is keeping you awake at night or you’re struggling to deal with stress, call us now and we will help.

How to Overcome Tooth Loss with Dental Treatment

Tuesday, April 28th, 2015

386703_blogTooth loss can be distressing, no matter what age you are. Thankfully, at City Dental Leeds, we have some amazing tooth replacement treatments on offer.

What are the benefits of replacing missing teeth?

There are lots of benefits of replacing missing teeth. Gaps in the teeth make the smile look unhealthy and unattractive, affecting your confidence and self-esteem. They also increase the risk of oral disease. Missing teeth can also make it more difficult to eat and pronounce certain sounds, so may have a negative impact on speech.

By replacing missing teeth, we can restore the beauty of the smile, enhance your self-esteem and enable you to eat and speak with confidence.

Tooth replacement options

We have a number of options to suit our patients’ varying needs. Whether you have lost a single tooth in an accident or you need to replace a full arch of teeth, we can find the right solution for you. Our treatments include dentures, dental bridges and dental implants.

Dentures: dentures are sets of false teeth, and are ideally suited to those with multiple missing teeth. They are custom-made for a comfortable fit and they are an affordable, simple solution for tooth loss. With modern dentures, you can enjoy all the benefits of a healthy, strong smile.

Dental bridges: bridges are an ideal choice for replacing a single lost tooth. The process usually involves only two sessions and the procedure to fit the bridge is painless and quick. Bridges are custom-made to fit the gap perfectly and they can be made from ceramics to create a very natural look. Bridges last up to 15 years and the most common type is a traditional fixed bridge. This consists of a false tooth attached to a crown on both sides.

Dental implants: implants are the closest prosthesis to a natural tooth and their purpose is to act as a replacement tooth root. They are implanted into the tooth root and they act as an anchor for new crowns, bridges or dentures. With implants, you can enjoy amazing aesthetics, longevity and very high standards of functionality.

The Details About Dentures

Friday, April 24th, 2015

3177025_blogThink you know everything about dentures? Think again! If you thought dentures were bulky, uncomfortable sets of false teeth, you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Our modern, stylish dentures look like glowing healthy natural teeth, so you can feel completely confident when you smile.

The details about dentures

Dentures have been used to replace missing teeth for many decades but today’s dentures are a far cry from the original versions. Light, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, modern dentures provide you with the same benefits as healthy natural teeth. We have partial and complete dentures on offer to cater for all your tooth loss needs and we can also fit implant-retained dentures, which combine aspects of implant and denture treatment.

Every denture is custom-made for the individual patient and our dentists take great care when fitting the denture to achieve the perfect outcome. If the denture is not a perfect fit or it starts to become loose, adjustments can be made. We check dentures every time you have a routine check-up to make sure that they still fit well. Dentures need replacing occasionally because the contours of the mouth change constantly.

How do dentures compare to other treatment options?

Dentures are less expensive than dental implants and more versatile than dental bridges. They can be used to replace full arches, as well as a smaller number of missing teeth. Dentures do not last a lifetime, but they can be modified and replaced easily. The treatment process is very simple and once you get used to cleaning your denture, it will become part of your daily routine.

If you’d like to find out if dentures are the best solution for you, call us now and make an appointment.

Which Restorative Treatment Will be Crowned the Best for You?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

2433646_sIf you’re looking for restorative treatment fit for a king or queen, you’ve come to the right place! At City Dental Leeds, we have a range of options ready and waiting to restore broken and damaged teeth and improve your oral health.

Our treatment options include crowns, veneers, white fillings, dental bridges, inlays and onlays. We also offer dentures and dental implants to replace missing teeth.

What do the different treatments do?

Crowns: crowns are robust restorations often called into action when a tooth is severely damaged or decayed. They are placed on top of the natural tooth structure and they help to prevent any further damage. Crowns can be made from ceramics and metals and they can last for many years.

White fillings: fillings are commonly used to treat decayed teeth when a cavity has formed in the tooth surface. White fillings are made from dental composite and resins and they repair the tooth without detracting from the beautiful aesthetic of the smile.

Dental bridges: bridges are a popular replacement option for a missing tooth. They can be made from ceramic for a very subtle, natural look and they should last for 10-15 years. Treatment can usually be completed in two sessions.

Inlays and onlays: inlays and onlays are often described as the mid-point between crowns and fillings. They are usually made from porcelain and they help to strengthen the teeth and protect them from injury and decay. Onlays incorporate the outer cusps of the tooth surface, while inlays are restricted to the inner surface of the teeth.

Veneers: veneers can be used to patch up individual teeth or used as a set to create a perfect looking smile. Veneers can be made from various materials, including porcelain, and they are a very popular cosmetic dental treatment.

Freshen Up by Flossing in Addition to Brushing

Monday, April 20th, 2015

357249_blogIf you’re looking for ways to freshen up and make your smile sparkle this spring, why not add a couple of extra minutes to your daily oral hygiene regime and incorporate flossing or inter-dental brushing? You often hear dentists stressing the importance of flossing in addition to brushing, but the reality is that most people focus solely on brushing.

Why is flossing so beneficial?

Flossing involves passing very thin tape known as dental floss through the cracks between the teeth. It helps to dislodge food debris and remove bacteria and it’s really important because it cleans the parts of the mouth that can’t be reached easily with a toothbrush. Flossing helps to reduce the risk of plaque formation, which in turn decreases the chances of decay, bad breath and gum disease. Flossing can also help to reduce staining and discolouration.

How often should I floss?

We recommend flossing on a daily basis. It only takes a minute or two, but it can really make a difference to oral health. If you have any questions about flossing or you’d like advice on how to floss, our dentists and dental hygienists will be happy to help.

Alternatives to flossing

If you don’t like flossing or you find it too fiddly, we recommend using inter-dental brushes. These small, hand-held brushes are specially designed to clean between the teeth. They come in various sizes and your dentist can show you how to use them.

Should my gums bleed when I floss?

If you’re flossing for the first time, you may find that your gums bleed because you’re not used to it. However, if you’re used to flossing and you notice bleeding, this may be a sign of gum disease and we advise you to call and make an appointment.

Lumineers are different to traditional porcelain veneers because they are thinner, but also stronger. They last up to twice as long as some other veneers and as they are so fine and delicate, the preparatory work is minimal. They also have a beautiful luminescent finish.

Lumineers are simply placed over the top of your natural teeth to create a brand new, beautiful smile. Each veneer is individually designed based on impressions of your teeth.

How could veneers benefit me?

Veneers are often associated with the rich and famous, but cosmetic dentistry is now accessible to all and you don’t need to be a Hollywood starlet to enjoy a stunning smile.
