Stunning Dental Crowns Look Just Like Natural Teeth

Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

4756357_blogWe always strive to achieve a natural-looking aesthetic using a conservative approach and our stunning crowns look just like healthy natural teeth. With crown treatment fit for any king or queen, we can restore and strengthen your teeth while also creating a beautiful and subtle result. We offer our patients a choice of single-day Cerec crown treatment or hand-crafted crowns, which are available in two to three weeks.

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are sometimes referred to as caps. They sit on top of the tooth to strengthen the structure and provide a solution for weak, fractured and decayed teeth. We use ceramics such as porcelain to achieve a seamless finish and the best quality materials to ensure durability and longevity.

You may be advised to have a crown in the following instances:

  • you have a broken tooth
  • your tooth is weak as a result of a large cavity
  • you have an infected tooth and have had root canal treatment
  • your tooth is severely damaged as a result of an accident or injury
  • you have a single missing tooth and you are undergoing implant treatment

The benefits of crowns

There are many advantages of crown treatment. The most obvious benefit is improved oral health and enhanced functionality. Once a tooth has been crowned, it will be stronger and it can exert more force when you are eating, chewing and biting. Crowns also have aesthetic benefits and the procedure helps to reduce the risk of further injury to the tooth and spread of decay or infection. Crowns can be made from ceramics, which provide a very natural look and they are hard-wearing. Crowns are not permanent restorations, but they do last a long time.

How is a crown fitted?

Before a crown is fitted, the tooth undergoes preparatory work which involves taking away the damaged and decayed tissue and shaping the tooth. If you are having a hand-crafted crown, your dentist will make an impression of your tooth from putty and this will be sent away to the laboratory and then the new crown will be fitted around two weeks later. If you are having a Cerec crown, photographs will be taken of the tooth and the crown will be fitted on the same day.

Speed

As you’ve probably deduced from the name of the treatment, Six Month Smiles takes just six months to straighten the teeth and create beautiful smiles. Many treatments take at least 12 months, so this is a really quick option and a great choice for those who want results fast or planning for special events such as the perfect wedding day.

Discreet aesthetics

Six Month Smiles are fixed braces, but this doesn’t mean that you have to show off an unsightly, cumbersome metal brace every time you smile. These braces are fine and delicate and they are made from tooth-coloured wires and clear brackets. Once your braces have been fitted, they will barely be noticeable when you smile and this should give you greater confidence during the treatment period.

Comfort

Six Month Smiles uses advanced self-ligating technology that helps to reduce friction and gentle forces to move the teeth quickly and comfortably. Like all braces, it can take a couple of days to get used to Six Month Smiles, but you should find them very comfortable once you have become acclimatised.

Beautiful results

Six Month Smiles is specifically designed to correct issues that affect the front teeth and this means that you are guaranteed a stunning smile once your braces are taken off.

If you like the sound of Six Month Smiles and you’re keen to see if you’re a good candidate for this sensational system, simply call us or pop in and speak to our friendly reception team to arrange a consultation.

Invisalign Gives Everyone Something to Smile About

Sunday, May 24th, 2015

2904346_blogYou may be surprised to hear that a trip to the dentist could give you something to smile about, especially if you suffer from nerves or dental anxiety. But with Invisalign, we promise that you won’t be able to stop smiling after every dental visit. This innovative invisible brace will transform your smile in secret, boosting your confidence and ensuring that you won’t be able to stop showing off those beautiful pearly whites!

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign offers something different to traditional orthodontic treatment and it works in a different way. Forces are still used to exert pressure on the teeth, but instead of using a fixed appliance made from brackets and wires, Invisalign uses multiple removable appliances, known as aligners. Each patient is given a set of custom-made aligners before they begin treatment and they are specifically designed to work in sequence. each aligner works for two weeks before being swapped for the next in the order. The aligners are shaped slightly differently and they are made according to a detailed and personalised treatment plan, which is drawn up using the latest imaging software. This plan charts the movement of the teeth and ensures that the aligners encourage movement while also providing enough space for the teeth to move.

Invisalign aligners are removable, but they should ideally be in place for 22 hours a day at least. You can take them out very easily to eat, drink and clean your teeth.

Who is a good match for Invisalign?

Invisalign is ideally suited to patients who are desperate to remain incognito during the treatment phase. The aligners are virtually invisible, as they are made entirely from light, clear plastic. They are capable of correcting minor and moderate issues and are generally recommended for patients who require a limited amount of movement.

If you would like to find out if Invisalign is the perfect match for you, call today and arrange a consultation!

All About Damon Braces

Friday, May 22nd, 2015

18625044If you’re thinking about having orthodontic treatment to straighten out issues and imperfections such as crowded or twisted teeth, we have some truly amazing treatments on offer. In the past, orthodontic patients were often put off having treatment due to a fear of pain and a lack of confidence in the aesthetic of braces. However, orthodontics has advanced rapidly and you can now enjoy comfortable treatment that also offers incredibly discreet aesthetics. With modern treatments such as Damon Braces, you really can have it all!

What are Damon Braces?

Damon Braces are discreet fixed braces that embody everything that is good about modern orthodontic treatment. These innovative braces have been developed with patients in mind and they tick many of the boxes when it comes to patient preferences and desires. Not only do these braces look good, they also use the latest technology to reduce treatment time and prevent discomfort.

Damon Braces are made from streamlined sliding brackets and discreet self-ligating wires that reduce friction and speed up treatment time. They are suited to patients with a wide range of orthodontic problems, including those who have complex needs and therefore are unsuitable candidates for removable braces and aligners.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment times vary for each patient and the length of time you have to wear braces is heavily dependent on how much movement you need and the complexity of the issues that are being resolved by the braces. This treatment is suitable for those who need intensive attention and therefore treatment times may be longer than systems designed for patients with minor issues. Typically, treatment takes between 9 and 24 months. Treatment times are, on average, 4-6 months shorter than traditional fixed braces.

What are the benefits?

Here are just some of the many benefits offered by Damon Braces:

  • comfortable friction-free treatment
  • faster treatment than standard fixed braces
  • discreet aesthetics
  • amazing results
  • no need for extraction prior to treatment
  • suitable for patients with complex prescriptions

Bye Bye Bad Breath!

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

4361359_blogIf you suffer from bad breath, we can help you say bye-bye for good! Our hygiene treatments will banish halitosis and enable you to feel confident in social situations.

About bad breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common oral health issue that affects thousands of people in the UK. Many people feel embarrassed and self-conscious, especially in social situations, due to bad breath. However, we can assure you that you’re not alone and there are easy ways to tackle this problem and increase your confidence.

Bad breath is sometimes caused by eating strongly flavoured foods such as onions, garlic and spicy food. It can also be caused by smoking and taking some types of medication. However, it most commonly caused by poor oral hygiene, which results in bacteria collecting in the mouth. When bacteria feed, they release gases that have an unpleasant odour. Most cases of bad breath are linked to bacteria located at the back of the tongue.

Treating bad breath

Temporary cases of bad breath can usually be alleviated by brushing the teeth and maintaining good oral hygiene at home. We also recommend chewing sugar-free gum after eating if you find that you are prone to developing bad breath after eating or drinking.

If you suffer from bad breath on a regular basis, the best course of action is usually to visit your dentist and dental hygienist on a frequent basis. Cleaning treatments are much more intensive than brushing at home and they target plaque and tartar to freshen up the mouth, remove bacteria and prevent bacteria build-up. We will also be happy to offer tips for cleaning at home and we recommend sticking to a thorough daily oral hygiene regime and cleaning the tongue, as well as the teeth.

If you’re embarrassed by bad breath or you’re looking for a solution that really works, call us now!

How an Oral Cancer Screening Could Save Your Life

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

658156_blogMany people dread going to the dentist, but how would you feel if a trip to the dentist saved your life? Oral cancer is a deadly disease and screening can literally make the difference between life and death. At City Dental Leeds we are eager to do our bit to raise awareness of oral cancer and we strongly recommend frequent check-ups and oral cancer screening tests.

About oral cancer screening

Oral cancer screening is not used to diagnose oral cancer, but it can be highly effective in flagging up potential warning signs that can then be examined in greater detail. Screening involves taking a close look at the soft tissue in the mouth and throat to check for possible signs of oral cancer. We use state of the art technology, including specially designed intra-oral cameras, to identify abnormalities in the soft tissue. Any abnormalities are highlighted and if your dentist suspects that there may be a potential risk of oral cancer they can then refer you for further tests.

About oral cancer

Oral cancer is not the most common form of cancer, but it is becoming much more prevalent in the UK and it affects more than 6,000 people every year. In the last decade alone, the number of cases has almost doubled, yet survival rates have stalled, as many people are unaware of the causes, risk factors and symptoms and this means that most cases are diagnosed at a late stage, when there is a high risk that cancer has spread.

The most common symptoms of oral cancer are slow-healing sores and mouth ulcers, abnormal lumps or swelling in the mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing and red or white patches in the mouth. If you have a mouth ulcer that lasts for longer than two weeks, we strongly recommend getting it checked out. It’s highly likely that there’s nothing to worry about, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Risk factors for oral cancer include drinking alcohol, smoking, a poor diet and exposure to certain viruses, including the HPV (human papilloma virus), which is also linked to cervical cancer.

If you would like to find out more about oral cancer or you would like to book a screening test, don’t hesitate to call us or pop in and see us if you’re nearby.

What is an Oral Abscess and How are They Treated?

Monday, May 18th, 2015

585811_blogOral abscesses develop in the mouth. There are two main types: periapical abscesses and periodontal abscesses. Periapical abscess develop beneath the tooth, while periodontal abscesses, which are not as common, form in the gums and bone structure.

About dental abscesses

Dental abscesses are pus-filled sores that tend to be very painful. They are caused by bacteria collecting in the mouth. The most common sign of a dental abscess is severe throbbing pain, which comes on suddenly and usually gets worse with time. If you think you may have a dental abscess, you should arrange to see your dentist urgently. Other symptoms to look out for include swelling (which may affect the whole of the side of the face), tenderness and sensitivity. Some people also suffer a high temperature and generally feel unwell when they have an abscess.

Dental abscesses are usually caused by poor oral hygiene, which results in bacteria collecting in the mouth. Your diet can also increase the risk of oral infections, especially if you consume a lot of sweet or starchy foods. The best ways to prevent a dental abscess are to practice good oral hygiene at home, eat a healthy, balanced diet, stick to the recommended daily sugar intake and visit your dentist for regular check-ups.

Treating a dental abscess

Unlike other types of abscess, dental abscesses must be treated by a dentist rather than a doctor. To treat an abscess, it needs to be drained and removed. Occasionally, antibiotics may be prescribed to reduce symptoms. Dental abscesses don’t get better with time and for this reason they should be treated as a dental emergency.

When In Doubt, Check it Out! The Importance of a Check-Up Explained

Sunday, May 17th, 2015

585804_blogThe trouble with dental problems is that they seldom get better without treatment and in most cases, they get considerably worse. We strongly recommend regular routine check-ups as an effective preventative measure against decay, gum disease and bad breath.

Why are check-ups so important?

Check-ups are essential for good oral health because they enable dentists to identify and treat any problems. When you have a dental check, your dentist will carry out a thorough examination to look for signs of decay, tooth damage, gum disease and oral cancer and any issues that are spotted can then be treated. Oral diseases tend to get worse the longer they are left and nipping problems in the bud will save you from experiencing pain, prevent the situation from becoming more serious and save you money on dental care in the long-run.

What happens when you have a check-up?

When you go for a check-up, you shouldn’t feel nervous or worried. Check-ups are only very short and there’s no pain involved. Your dentist will simply have a thorough look around your mouth under a bright light to see how your mouth is doing, check for signs of cavities or gum disease and identify any changes that may have occurred since your last check-up. Any important information will be recorded in your notes and if you do need any treatment, this will be discussed with you. Your dentist will also be happy to chat to you and answer questions and they may offer advice about oral hygiene or diet.

How often should I see my dentist?

Ideally, we recommend six-monthly check-ups. If you are prone to dental problems, we may advise you to come in more frequently. If you develop problems such as tooth pain, swelling or bleeding gums between check-ups, don’t wait until your next scheduled appointment. Call and make an appointment sooner and we’ll do our best to have you fighting it again as quickly as possible.
