For patients who require teeth straightening, the prospect of wearing unseemly and uncomfortable braces for the best part of two years can be a daunting one. Thankfully, with the advances in dental technology that have occurred over the last twenty years, patients now have alternatives to the old fashioned fixed metal braces.

In 1999 Align technologies introduced the Invisalign brace system which revolutionised the world of orthodontic teeth straightening. Invisalign offered a genuine alternative to metal braces for the first time. Clear plastic braces had existed in the past but they were at best ineffectual and most patients still opted for the traditional fixed metal variety.

For teenagers in the most difficult and emotionally unstable years of development, wearing the visible intrusive metal braces could be a source of great embarrassment. For older patients, wearing a brace was often difficult because of the stigma attached. Thanks to Invisalign they were now able to straighten their teeth with a suitably discrete brace.

Invisalign braces are made from one thin clear plastic that are engineered and manufactures using the very latest in imaging and computer-aided technology. A series of twenty or so retainers are used consecutively, each with a small adjustment designed to move the teeth into the desired position. The retainers are more or less invisible unless up very close to the patient, and they also have the advantage of being completely removable. This is ideal for patients who need to attend important social or professional occasions. It also means that certain foods that are off-limits to foxed brace wearers pose no problem for the Invisalign system.

Invisalign is a revolutionary new system of invisible plastic braces that are only noticeable when up very close to the teeth. From any distance they are almost completely invisible and they help to straighten teeth without the need for irritating and uncomfortable metal braces. They are fabricated from clear plastic that is one millimeter thick and are fully removable so can be taken out at meal times to avoid the messy process of eating with braces.

Invisalign retainers were created in 1999 by Align technologies. Although they were not the first invisible braces on the market, using advances in computer technology they were by far and away the most accurate and the first to be able to properly compete with conventional metal braces in terms of final results. Using the latest 3D imaging the dentist is now able to make the invisible braces to an incredible degree of accuracy, and the need for uncomfortable dental molding is greatly reduced. This computer aided manufacture and design has also significantly reduced fabrication time and cost.

The Invisalign braces work by gradually manipulating teeth into the desired position. On average twenty sets of retainers are needed per treatment, with slightly adjusted retainers being introduced every two to three weeks to achieve the gradual movement, although numbers of retainers and length of treatment vary with each patient.

Invisalign braces can greatly reduce the embarrassment of wearing old-fashioned metal braces. Their discreet design and impressive results have meant more and more patients are opting for invisible braces. Introduced in 1999 by Align technologies, Invisalign is a series of plastic retainers that fit over the patient’s teeth gradually forcing them into position. Each set of retainers needs to be worn for two to three weeks before a new set is used. Usually twenty or so sets of retainers are needed to complete a full treatment, depending on the patient.

The retainers are made from one-millimeter thick clear plastic and are almost impossible to see unless standing extremely close to the patient’s mouth. The braces are also removable so can be taken out at meal times. This means that unlike other braces certain foods are not of limit.

While invisible braces have existed before they have never had the degree of accuracy of Invisalign. Due to the advancements of technology, and introduction of CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacture), Invisalign braces can be made to the exact specifications of a 3D projection. A Central Leeds dentist will be able to make this 3D projection from one mold and an x-ray, then a computer guided machine can manufacture the retainers, in a fraction of the time of previous invisible braces, to an unbelievable standard of accuracy.

Although Invisalign braces may not be suitable for all patients, and it has to be said conventional metal braces have also come a long way, an Invisalign brace can straighten your teeth without knocking your confidence.
