Don’t Take It For Granted. Get Checked For Oral Cancer Quickly

863081_blogLike many forms of cancer, oral cancer can progress very quickly and we actively promote screening and regular dental checks to ensure that cases are diagnosed at the earliest possible stage. With early diagnosis, the chances of survival are much higher.

About oral cancer

Oral cancer is a form of cancer, which is found in the soft tissue in the mouth and throat. Research shows that this form of cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK, with an increase of almost 50% in the last decade alone. Projections also predict that this trend will continue. More than 6,000 new cases were diagnosed last year.

The major risk factors for oral cancer include drinking alcohol on a regular basis, smoking and HPV (human papilloma virus) infection. If you have more than one risk factor, you are more likely to develop oral cancer. Smokers who also drink, for example, are up to 30 times more likely to get oral cancer than non-smokers who drink infrequently.

Oral cancer detection

Sadly, at the moment, most cases of oral cancer are diagnosed when the disease has already progressed and survival rates have stalled. With early diagnosis, we can help to improve survival rates, as there is a much lower risk of cancer spreading when the disease at spotted at a very early stage.

The main symptoms to look for include slow-healing ulcers, red/white patches in the mouth and swelling in the throat, which may make it difficult to swallow. Some patients also have a persistent sore throat.

Screening

We promote oral cancer screening, which helps us to detect changes in the oral tissue before they become visible to the naked eye and we also check for potential warning signs during routine check-ups.
