Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

863081_blogSleep apnoea is potentially very serious and it requires diligent management. If you suffer from sleep apnoea or you snore on a regular basis, we may be able to help. Sleep is so important, not just to ensure you feel alert and alive during the day, but also to keep you fighting fit, and with our help, you could soon be enjoying a much better night’s sleep.

What is sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder, which occurs when the body is not getting enough oxygen; it disrupts breathing and it can be very serious. Most commonly, cases of sleep apnoea are diagnosed in people who are overweight or obese; this disorder is also more common in men than women.

Sleep apnoea is not the same as snoring, but if you snore regularly, this can be a sign that your body is struggling for oxygen and it may be symptomatic of sleep apnoea.

How we can help

In minor cases of sleep apnoea, it may be possible to ease symptoms without formal treatment; this is usually true in cases where the individual is very overweight. Losing weight and adopting a healthier lifestyle can have a very positive impact on breathing and circulation.

In severe cases, breathing apparatus may be required to improve breathing while you sleep.

In moderate cases, we may be able to help by providing a custom-made appliance to move the jaw forward; this helps to improve air flow and prevent problems with breathing. The appliance is designed to fit perfectly for optimum comfort and it will enable you to sleep soundly night after night. We can also provide the same appliances for patients who snore on a regular basis.

4070440_blogMouth cancer is a disease, which affects more than 6,000 people every year in the UK and at City Dental Leeds, we are on a mission to protect our patients. We offer mouth cancer screening to detect early warning signs and maximise the chances of successful treatment and we are also on hand to discuss causes and risk factors with patients.

About mouth cancer

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, affects the soft tissue in the mouth and throat. The most influential risk factors for oral cancer include smoking, drinking alcohol and exposure to the HPV infection, which is transmitted through sexual contact. A poor diet can also increase the risk of mouth cancer.

The most common symptoms of mouth cancer to look out for include red or white patches in the mouth, slow-healing ulcers or sores and any abnormal lumps in the mouth or throat. Other symptoms may include a persistent sore throat and difficulty swallowing.

The importance of screening

Screening for mouth cancer is so important because as with most forms of cancer, is can progress very quickly and the chances of survival are much higher when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage. It s estimated that early treatment increases the chances of survival by up to 90 per cent. Screening allows our dentists to identify potential warning signs before they become visible to the naked eye and this can make the difference between life and death.

Screening isn’t painful and it takes just a few minutes; come and see us today; it could save your life!

Get Checked-up In Leeds! Mouth Cancer Can Be Beaten Early

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

2487210_blogWhen it comes to mouth cancer the earlier the diagnosis the better. This is why we actively encourage our patients to attend regular check-ups and take advantage of oral cancer screening. Studies suggest that early diagnosis can increase the chance of surviving mouth cancer by up to 90 per cent.

The latest statistics show that more than 6,000 people in the UK were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year and although there have been major improvements in survival rates for many other forms of cancer, this is sadly not the case with mouth cancer because most cases are diagnosed when the cancer is advanced. A lack of awareness prevents many people from seeing their dentist or doctor when they have symptoms and often, the disease is picked up during tests for other illnesses. We aim to educate our patients about the symptoms and causes of mouth cancer to increase the chances of early diagnosis.

What causes mouth cancer?

Cancer is caused by abnormal cell growth and in many cases it is impossible to determine an exact cause. The main risks associated with oral cancer include drinking alcohol and smoking on a regular basis and HPV infection; HPV stands for human papilloma virus. This virus is spread through sexual contact and it is also linked to cervical cancer.

Warning signs to watch out for

The most common symptoms of mouth cancer include abnormal swelling in the mouth or throat, white or red patches in the mouth and ulcers or sores, which take a long time to heal (more than 2 weeks). Other signs may include a persistent cough.

Sleep apnoea is not the same as heavy snoring and it requires careful management because it affects breathing. People who have sleep apnoea experience bouts of disturbed breathing during their sleep.

There are various risk factors for sleep apnoea, including being overweight or obese, age, sex, medical history, smoking, drinking alcohol and family history. Men and people over the age of 40 have a higher risk of sleep apnoea.

Often, making simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference to patients with sleep apnoea; these may include losing weight, doing more exercise, giving up smoking and cutting down on drinking. We are here to help and we can offer advice about healthy eating and giving up smoking.

We can also help with anti-snoring treatment. If your partner snores on a regular basis and this is affecting your sleep pattern, you will probably have noticed that you feel tired during the day and this can affect your performance at work, as well as your general mood. We can provide specially designed devices to keep the airway open by holding the jaw slightly forward. These have a very high success rate.

At City Dental Leeds we understand the importance of a good night’s sleep and we can help to manage sleep apnoea effectively.

What causes sleep apnoea?

The main risk factor for sleep apnoea is being overweight or obese. Sleep apnoea is more common in men and tends to affect people over the age of 40 years old. Taking sedatives can increase the risk of sleep apnoea and drinking alcohol can make the problem worse.

What can be done for sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is a serious condition, which disrupts breathing during sleep. Thankfully, there are solutions, which can help to control sleep apnoea and reduce symptoms. In cases where sleep apnoea is related to obesity, making lifestyle changes can make a massive difference; this may include losing weight, changing your diet, doing more exercise and steering clear of cigarettes and alcohol.

Another treatment option for more severe cases is breathing apparatus, which is used to help you breathe more easily during the night. A type of treatment called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is often used and it involves the individual wearing a mask during the night.

We can also offer dental appliances to help combat sleep apnoea. An appliance called a mandibular splint helps to improve breathing by holding the lower jaw in a forward position, which increases air flow by keeping the airway open.
