Learn About Periodontal Disease And Its Symptoms

Tuesday, October 13th, 2015

3268322_blogPeriodontal disease is a stage of gum disease. It infects the tissues that support your teeth and the bone that surrounds them.  Along with tooth decay it’s one of the two most major threats to a person’s dental health and thus should be taken very seriously.

Symptoms of gum disease

It begins as gingivitis as the gums become red and swollen, eventually causing them to bleed. If it’s left untreated for a period of time, gingivitis can then develop into something a lot more severe called periodontitis and this can spell disaster. With periodontitis the teeth can be severely loosened and may even fall out entirely. This is because periodontitis causes the gums to pull away from the teeth and the surrounding bone can be lost. It is important to do your best to ensure that this disease doesn’t take effect or have time to develop. It’s a good idea to look out for some of the symptoms that precede periodontal disease, including bad breath, red or swollen gums, pain when chewing, and sensitive or loose teeth. But if you don’t manage to prevent it from occurring there are ways to manage it.

How can it be treated?

To keep gingivitis at bay it’s absolutely vital to both floss and brush regularly as this stops bacteria building up in between teeth and on the gums. Seeing a dentist at least once a year could mean the difference between gingivitis being caught early and therefore not developing into the far more severe periodontitis. If you suffer from any of the preceding symptoms that were mentioned earlier, it’s even more necessary to see a dental professional. A dentist is able to do a lot more intensive treatments that will help, such as prescribing medicines, deep cleaning of the tooth root surfaces and sometimes, if necessary, corrective surgery.

We Can Prevent But Also Treat Gum Disease In Central Leeds

Monday, January 5th, 2015

1788888_blogWhen it comes to gum disease, we have the expertise to prevent and treat cases and we cater for patients with diverse needs, from those who have good oral health and no signs of decay or gum disease, to those who have advance gum disease and require ongoing treatment. We aim to make you feel comfortable and to do everything we can to improve your oral health.

About gum disease

Gum disease is a very common oral disease, which is characterised by swollen and sore gums; it is caused by acids released by harmful bacteria in plaque, which irritate the gums. Most cases of gum disease are linked to poor oral hygiene, but smoking and diet can also play a role.

Plaque forms when bacteria and food debris are joined together by saliva; it is a sticky film-like substance, which can grip onto the surfaces of the teeth and the gum line.

Preventing gum disease

The best way of preventing gum disease is to focus on oral hygiene and ensure you keep your mouth as clean as possible. Twice daily brushing and daily flossing are effective ways of cleaning away food traces and bacteria before they are able to develop into plaque. We also highly recommend seeing a dentist for a check-up every 6-9 months and seeing a hygienist for a cleaning treatment every 12 months. Avoiding sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which increase the risk of acid erosion of the enamel and gum irritation, is also advisable.

Treating gum disease

In mild cases of gum disease (gingivitis), good oral hygiene is usually sufficient to clear symptoms and reverse any damaging effects; however, in more advanced cases, where gingivitis has developed into periodontal disease, treatment is not as straightforward. Periodontal disease (also known as periodontitis) causes irreversible damage to the gums and the bone tissue beneath them, which hold the teeth in place. Once the bone is damaged, the teeth start to become less secure in their sockets and will eventually come loose.

Severe gum disease requires careful management and treatment takes place over a prolonged period of time; our dentists and dental hygienists work together to perform procedures, which remove harmful bacteria, plaque and tartar from the mouth to cleanse the and protect the gums and to ensure that patients feel as comfortable as possible.

The shocking links between Gum Disease and Diabetes in the City of Leeds

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

302075_blogGum disease is an absolutely diabolical condition that tears through the mouth and body causing possible tooth loss and heart failure in the future in the city of Leeds, and if that isn’t enough, it can bring on the problem of diabetes. The poisons from diseased gums leak into the bloodstream and diminish the immune system and with this down or weakened, it is very easy for diabetes to step in and damage you even more. But this works the other way too, for diabetes also diminishes the immune system, breaking down the saliva levels that the mouth requires to naturally take on the fight against bacteria, and so, this leaves you wide open to gum disease. At the first sign of blood on a toothbrush, you need to seek help and work hard at ridding yourself of it to avoid complications in the future. Similarly, you will have to work hard if you already have diabetes and ensure you are using the right medication so that you don’t suffer from gum disease.

The Gravity of Gum Disease in the City of Leeds

Friday, May 25th, 2012

One of the most undesirable conditions to suffer from in the mouth is gum disease and at some point in life, most people in the city of Leeds will suffer from it in some form. It really is a destructive menace not only to your teeth and gums, but to your body too. The early signs of it are bleeding and weeping gums. At this point, it can (and must) be brought under control quite easily but quickly. Conferring with your dentist and embracing herbal remedies should overcome the problem. But the warning shots have been made and it will be ready to strike again unless you are attentive to your oral hygiene. If however it is allowed to develop further, the gums will begin to recede and you will be in danger of losing your teeth. Again, even advanced gum disease can be halted and even reversed and by getting advice from a herbal specialist, you can turn the condition around. But during this time, the disease will have already started to infect the bloodstream with toxins and over a prolonged period, will have started to affect the heart and other vital organs and too much poison will cause them to fail altogether. This is a condition not to be taken lightly and should never be ignored- if you have the symptoms, seek immediate help.
