Spotting the signs of sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a disorder that affects your ability to breathe normally when you sleep. It is causes you to become short of breath and results from the airway becoming obstructed. The airway becomes blocked because the muscles in the throat relax. Apnoea is diagnosed when the airway is blocked for 10 seconds or longer.

Sometimes, the symptoms of sleep apnoea are difficult to notice and in many cases they may be spotted by your partner. The most common signs of sleep apnoea include:

  • snoring (often loudly)

Sleep apnoea may also contribute to a heightened risk of complications including depression, loss of libido, loss of memory and difficulty with concentration.

Treating sleep apnoea

In minor cases of sleep apnoea, you can often reduce or even eliminate symptoms by making lifestyle changes. The main risk factors for sleep apnoea are drinking alcohol, smoking and being overweight. At City Dental, we work with medical experts to provide effective treatment for patients with sleep apnoea.

In most cases, sleep apnoea is associated with being overweight, but there are additional risk factors, including smoking, nasal congestion, age, family history and drinking alcohol on a frequent basis. Men are also more likely to suffer from sleep apnoea than women.

Treating sleep apnoea

If it is left untreated, sleep apnoea can contribute to serious, even life-threatening complications, including high blood pressure and strokes. Treatment for sleep apnoea usually depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, making simple changes to your lifestyle can be sufficient to reduce symptoms, especially if you are a smoker or you drink on a regular basis. If you are overweight, losing weight will almost certainly have benefits and we can help you with a healthy eating regime. Exercise is also a really effective way to lose weight and it has so many benefits for your physical and mental wellbeing.

In more severe cases, medical treatment is usually required and this may involve wearing breathing apparatus (a mask) during the night, to ensure that your body is getting the oxygen it needs. This form of treatment is known as continuous positive airway pressure and it is also known as CPAP.

Dreaming of death: Sleep Apnea in Central Leeds

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013

There are some conditions in your mouth that are very obvious, come with instantly recognisable symptoms and hence, are easy to treat. Then there are some which are not so obvious and if left to carry on operating, will kill you in the end. One such killer is sleep apnea and the reason this is so difficult to identify at first is because it operates whilst you sleep. The people most likely to suffer from this in central Leeds are those whose have breathing problems; obese people for example, those who drink and smoke heavily, or people who have suffered from a heart condition or have had damage to their nervous system at some point in their lives. You see, when you go to sleep at night, you are at the mercy of your brain, heart and lungs and these three will work together to ensure you are taking enough air in to keep your system up and running. The brain sends signals through the nervous system for you to breathe and take air into your lungs. This oxygen is then pumped through your body, via your bloodstream, by your heart so that the cycle can start again. Block anyone of these however and the system starts to panic: each part of the cycle has to work harder and it places immense stress on your heart to keep going, which it won’t if it doesn’t have a regular supply of oxygen getting to it. This is sleep apnea and it can actually stop you breathing for up to 30 seconds at a time, causing incredible damage throughout. The only signs of it are tremendous fatigue throughout the day, and this breathing problem will also manifest itself in the way you breathe daily as well. You should ask your doctor for advice on sleep apnea if you feel that you may be at risk from it.

The midnight villain: Sleep Apnoea in Leeds

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

It’s a scary thought, but there are things going on while you sleep in Leeds that you have no control over, may not even be aware of and yet could end up being the death of you. You can often take it for granted that you’re going to wake up in the morning and yet never question just how it happens, well here’s how. You’re breathing and blood flow is regulated by messages sent from the brain down to your lungs to take in air so that it enters the bloodstream, allowing the heart to push oxygen and blood around the body and back up into the brain for the next cycle- genius eh? Well it is, as long as all of these three characters are working healthily and not interfered with. As you get older though, they may well have suffered some trauma at some point: damage to the central nervous system, obesity, poor lifestyle or a heart attack can diminish the effectiveness of this midnight automation system and it may start to have problems, especially if you have trouble getting air into your windpipe regularly: now welcome to the dark world of sleep apnoea. This is the condition that arises when your system starts to fail because of the lack of oxygen and all three of the main players will start to panic as the system breaks down. It will start to leave you drowsy and fatigued during the day, affect your daytime breathing as well and in the end, your heart will give up trying.

The Connection between your Heart and Sleep Apnoea on Leeds

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Sleep is one of the rare times in our hectic lives inLeedswhen we get a chance to recuperate from a hectic day in the city and get ourselves ready for the next day- and so it goes on. But it does rely on the fact that we are in perfect working order throughout and we live a healthy regime. Sleep apnoea is a condition though that preys on anything that goes wrong in the body. If you are a serial drinker or smoker, on medication, obese or have suffered damage to your nervous system at some point, you may well suffer from this condition. When we sleep at night, we need air into the lungs to ensure that the rest of our body functions correctly but if this is blocked in any manner what-so-ever, it will interfere with the natural breathing process between the brain, lungs and heart. The brain delivers messages to the heart to keep going and pump blood around the body. This in turn returns the favor by keeping the lungs going by pumping oxygen back into the brain. Take out the oxygen and the whole system breaks down. Irregular breathing during sleep trips up the heart and stops the other two. Yes, the body is resilient and will fight back- but only for so long and then the heart will stop. If you find yourself troubled with fatigue first thing in the morning and throughout the day, it means you are not sleeping right and getting enough air into yourself at night. Your dentist can supply you with the right device to help open the airways, but everything needs to change as well otherwise your body will refuse to co-operate.

The Problems of Central Apnoea in Central Leeds

Friday, January 13th, 2012

The body is a complex field of things that rely on other things to keep going in centralLeeds, but throw a spanner into the works of anyone of these and the rest will also suffer. Central apnoea is a result of one of these chains being broken and generally this is caused by severe complications within the body such as anything to do with the spinal chord from the top to the bottom or have had heart problems in the past. Heavy medication can do this too, but you know you are in trouble if you are suffering from things like heavy fatigue throughout the day or are restless when you sleep. The thing is that it is a very complex thing to deal with but you need to be able to regulate your breathing to ensure there is enough oxygen getting into your body, especially at night. Your dentist can supply you with devices to ensure your airways are always free when you sleep and advise you with breathing techniques to practice throughout the day.
