About restorative dentistry

Restorative dentistry is the field of dentistry, which deals with running repairs to the teeth; this kind of treatment aims to restore damaged or decayed teeth to improve function. Often, restorative treatment has benefits for the aesthetic of the smile, as well as making the tooth stronger, which is advantageous for eating and also decreases the risk of injury in the future.

Our treatments

We offer a comprehensive range of treatments, including white fillings, veneers, crowns and dental bridges. We can treat any issue, from a small cavity, to a set of broken and worn teeth.

Crowns

Crowns are also known as caps; they sit on top of your natural tooth to make it stronger. Crowns are custom-made for a perfect fit and they are generally recommended when a tooth is decayed or damaged as a result of injury or trauma. Placing a crown strengthens the tooth, giving you better functionality and reducing the risk of decay spreading and further crumbling. Porcelain crowns are very popular because they match the tooth shade for a seamless, natural looking finish.

Dental bridges

Bridges are a popular tooth replacement treatment, which provide rapid relief for patients with missing teeth. Bridges are custom-made and they can be made using ceramics or metals. A traditional fixed bridge comprises of a false tooth with a crown on either side. Bridge treatment can usually be completed in 2 sessions, which are usually 2-3 weeks apart; they should last for up to 15 years.

What is a crown?

A dental crown is a restorative appliance, which is used when a tooth is damaged, decayed, infected or broken. Crowns are slotted over the top of the tooth to make them stronger and reduce the risk of further injury. Crowns are sometimes called caps.

You may be advised to have a crown if you have extensive decay, you’ve broken or damaged your tooth as a result of a sports injury or an accident or your tooth is infected and the infection has reached the pulp tissue. This is the part of the tooth, which contains the nerves and blood vessels. In the case of infection, the crown is usually placed once root canal treatment has been carried out; this procedure removes the decayed tissue and seals the tooth roots to stop the infection from spreading. We may also fit a new crown to an implant to replace a missing tooth.

What are crowns made from?

There are various materials, which can be used to make a crown, including precious metals, such as gold and ceramics, such as porcelain. Often, we use ceramic fused to metal, as this produces a strong crown, which also looks very natural.

How long does a crown last?

In most cases, a crown should last for around 10 years provided that it well cared-for. When you have your regular check-ups, we will take a look at the crown to check that it is in good condition.
