It is very easy to be damning about dentures, even more horrifying the thought of having to wear them; but then, they haven’t had a good track record up until recently in Leeds: they weren’t portrayed in a good light. Yet they are very much back in vogue and there are two major reasons for this. The first is that less and less people are having to wear full dentures because of the way dentists treat gum and periodontal disease; dentists today are more excited about saving teeth, rather than pulling them at the merest hint of trouble. Hence there has been a massive rise in the number of people opting for chic, easy-to-wear partial dentures, after all, they are easy to manage and a lot cheaper than implants and bridges. The second reason is the way modern dentures are manufactured and the adhesives used to keep them in the mouth. They are softer and natural looking so when they are in the mouth, they adhere better and look better, and with the adhesives, they’ll stay put. There is a remarkable irony to those who wear dentures today though: dental implants were meant to be the modern day saviour to tooth loss and consign dentures to history. So it is remarkable that they are being used to help keep full dentures in the mouth far better than ever before. If you have suffered any form of tooth loss, maybe you should give dentures a second look.
