It probably is a bit of a contradiction in terms to say that there are joys in having a root canal done, but the benefits are massive and the joy comes from the fact you have just saved yourself a tooth and lots of money from the alternatives if the tooth goes altogether. Anyone from a previous generation in central Leeds though will probably tell you, there is no joy in having this treatment done and it doesn’t make good listening either. When major decay eats its way into the tooth, the pulp becomes diseased and the root infected- any further and you lose the tooth, but if you have a root canal, the decay is cleared, the roots drilled out and the tooth crowned. However, problems could arise, especially if the root couldn’t be removed completely, which meant, the dentist would have to cut the gum and go in from the side. Now if it sounds painful, many who were there would concur that it was. But there is a happy ending to this story- the laser. Gone are the scalpels and drills, the laser does it all in one painless hit- there’s the joy of root canal, less painful that ripping a plaster off.
