What is cosmetic bonding?
Cosmetic bonding is a procedure used to improve the aesthetic of the smile by making minor changes to the teeth. It is commonly used to repair chipped teeth and worn teeth, but it can also be used to make the gaps between two teeth smaller. Often, the changes that are brought about during this procedure are very minor, but the impact on the look of the smile is significant and an hour in the dental chair makes a massive difference to the look of your smile.
The actual procedure involves using dental composite, a white, putty-like substance, to build up surfaces, fill in chips and close gaps. While in its putty form, composite is malleable and very versatile and your dentist will use their skill to create the best aesthetic. Once they are happy with the placement of the composite, they will use a curing light to set the material and this will make it hard. Once it has set, composite is strong and it should last for several years, although it is not quite as durable as natural tooth enamel.
The bonding process takes less than an hour, there is usually no need for anaesthetic and the results will be clearly visible as soon as your dentist has finished.
