Spotting Mouth Cancer Early In City Centre, Leeds

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014

3708143_blogWhen it comes to mouth cancer, early diagnosis is essential and we are eager to raise awareness of mouth cancer to ensure all our patients are able to spot the warning signs. Mouth cancer is a form of cancer, which has become much more common in the UK over the course of the last decade and with early diagnosis we can help to fight this deadly disease and improve survival rates.

We include a mouth cancer check in our routine check-ups and we also urge patients to take advantage of mouth cancer screening, which enables our dentists to spot the very early signs using advanced technology, which identifies changes in the oral tissue, which are visible to the naked eye.

Signs of mouth cancer

One of the reasons survival rates have stalled in the UK is poor public awareness of the symptoms of mouth cancer. Other types of cancer, such as breast, cervical and testicular cancer, have a media profile and this means that most people are familiar with the symptoms, while oral cancer is less well-known, even though it kills more people each year than cervical and testicular cancer combined. The symptoms to look out for include:

  • abnormal lumps or swellings, which may make it harder for you to swallow
  • red or white patches in the mouth
  • mouth ulcers that take a long time to heal (more than 2 weeks)
  • a persistent sore throat

Our advice is to see your dentist every 6 months for a check-up and arrange an appointment if you notice any changes in the mouth. Usually, there’s nothing to worry about, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
