About crowns

Crowns are restorations used to bolster weakened and injured teeth. They are sometimes referred to as caps because they sit on top of the existing tooth structure. There are various reasons why you may need a crown, including:

  • dental injury, such as a broken tooth
  • severe decay
  • dental infection (usually placed following root canal treatment)
  • dental implant treatment to replace a missing tooth

Crown treatment

Every crown is custom-made based on an impression of the patient’s tooth. This ensures a perfect and comfortable fit and seamless aesthetics. Before treatment, the tooth is prepared. This process is designed to remove any decayed or damaged tooth tissue and shape the tooth ready for the crown. Making the impression involves using dental putty to form a mould of the teeth. This is then sent away to the laboratory, where it will be used by dental technicians to create the new crown. Once the crown has been sent back to us, we can then fit it. The crown is placed over the remaining tooth structure and then secured.

The benefits of porcelain crowns

Porcelain crowns are a highly effective means of strengthening a weak or decayed tooth without detracting from the beauty of the smile. Porcelain blends in with the natural tooth shade and has a stunning glossy finish. By placing a crown, you also reduce the risk of further injury to the tooth. Crowns are durable and they should last for up to 10 years. The process is simple and there’s no pain to worry about. Crowns have amazing restorative benefits, but they can also improve the look of a damaged tooth, and this may also increase your confidence.

18625010It is easy to think that some dental procedures can be tricky, painful and lengthy- maybe because of past experiences at your central Leeds dentists. However, dental treatments have improved incredibly over the past thirty or so years and it really doesn’t have to take a long time to get you sorted out. Dental crowns are and will always be a great source of comfort whenever you have been the victim of bad tooth decay or even loss and it really doesn’t take that long to have them in place to overcome problems in your mouth. Of course they have to be made and this on average can take a couple of weeks to do, especially if you opt for gold or porcelain-over-metal, but the fitting of them is remarkably quick. What is even more amazing is the art of CEREC: this treatment can make up, and have you kitted out with a full porcelain crown in just an hour from start to finish. It is rather a comforting testament to just what modern dentistry can do for you these days in order to keep your mouth healthy throughout your life.

The Crowning Glory for Your Teeth in Central Leeds

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Tooth decay is one of those things that is going to be around as long as Central Leeds will be, as it is so difficult to battle against and whatever fantastic products you through at it, it will break through your line of defence at some time. It slowly eats away at the tooth’s enamel and when it gets inside, you will be lucky to get away with a filling or a root canal but if it is allowed to continue, you will suffer from tooth loss. In the case of a root canal, you will have to have a partial crown fitted once the decay has been removed, to restore the length of the tooth to its former glory. If you have the money, you can literally have a crown made from anything, but on earth, there are three major choices. You can have a full porcelain crown if it is fitted where the forces going through it are minimal, but for strength, porcelain-over-metal or gold crowns are the best options. In the case of tooth loss, crowns can be incorporated into bridges, but if you have an implant fitted, you will need a full crown fitted, again, from the material of choice and necessity.

Dainty Dental Crowns in Central Leeds

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

If you have had a dental implant fitted or had some root canal treatment done to eradicate tooth decay, you will want to have a crown fitted afterwards. Now, in central Leeds, there are quite a few options to choose from in the sense of the material that they are made from, although in essence, if you have the money, you can have one made from whatever you fancy- within reason. This is governed however by where in the mouth the crown is to be placed; if it is required at the front of the mouth, very little stress is placed upon these teeth so a pure porcelain crown would suffice and fit in beautifully with the rest of your teeth. But in the back of the mouth, the teeth undergo a lot more stress from chewing so a stronger crown is needed. Porcelain-over-metal crowns are far stronger that pure porcelain ones and can take a lot more stress, but they also retain that beautiful porcelain hue that again mirrors the enamel in the rest of your teeth. However, if you want something that doesn’t fit in with the rest of your teeth and boldly sits in the mouth making a statement, then a gold crown is the one for you. It will stand out from the rest of your teeth, but not in an ugly way and being so strong, you could bite your way through wood!

Choosing Dental Crowns in Central Leeds is Always a Good Decision

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

A dental crown is a form of restorative treatment, also called a cap, and is used to give strength to any teeth that are decayed or damaged. The crown fits above the current tooth and helps to prevent further damage. Crowns come in a selection of materials, which include precious metals, ceramic materials, including porcelain and ceramic fused with metal.

Why choose a dental crown?

If a tooth is damaged as a result of injury, decay or an accident, a dental crown is a suitable treatment option. Crowns are used to bolster and restore the teeth, creating a more aesthetically pleasing and functional smile. Crowns help to reduce the risk of further damage to the tooth.

What does dental crown treatment involve?

Before a tooth can be crowned, it must be prepared, so your Central Leeds dentist will remove decayed tissue, clean the tooth and prepare the tooth using a special instrument called a burr. An impression will first be taken and the crown will be manufactured according to the mould. Once this is done the new crown will be placed over the top of the tooth and fixed into place.

How long does a crown last?

The lifespan of a crown depends on how well you look after your teeth. If you stick to an effective dental hygiene routine and avoid eating and drinking sugary and acidic foods and drinks, your crown should last several years. Regular dental check-ups are also very important.
