Mind the Gap

Tuesday, January 21st, 2020

There are many reasons why a person might be missing a tooth or teeth – such as decay, disease or injury – but the general consensus is that it’s not a good look. On anyone.

Of course, missing teeth aren’t only a problem aesthetically. The loss can also affect speech and the ability to eat. Furthermore, with more space than a mouth was designed for other teeth might decide to take advantage of the room and have a wander, meaning remaining teeth shift. In some cases, bone loss can also occur around a missing tooth.

In short, a missing tooth can turn out to be a little problem with big consequences. Thankfully, however, it can be a problem easily fixed.

The main options to replace a lost tooth or teeth tend to be crowns, bridges, dentures and implants.

Crowns and bridges

These are prosthetic devices that can only be removed by a dentist once they’re in. Crowns tend to be porcelain or ceramic ‘caps’ fixed onto damaged teeth or implants and made to match the colour of natural teeth.

Of course, if you prefer a little bling with your pearly whites – or you’re a rap artist from Otley – gold and metal alloys are also an option.

Bridges can also be as natural or outlandish as you like and they pretty much do what they say on the tin. A prosthetic device that spans the space where the teeth are missing, a bridge is cemented onto the natural teeth either side of a gap.

As with crowns, there is a choice of materials for bridges and your dentist can help you decide which would best suit the location of the missing tooth or teeth. By maintaining good oral hygiene, a bridge can last a lifetime.

These are removable appliances that restore your smile in an instant if you’ve lost most or all of your teeth. Extensive tooth loss tends to result in sagging facial muscles, so dentures can also take years off you. In some respects it’s the dental equivalent of a facelift.

Conventional dentures are made and positioned once any remaining teeth have been removed. However, they can only be worn once the gums have healed, which could take several months. If this is a concern, some dentures can be inserted on the same day, with corrections made once the jaw has healed.

Another alternative is the overdenture which can be placed over any remaining natural teeth.

If it is only one tooth missing rather than a number of teeth, a partial denture might be the answer. This takes the form of a false tooth attached to a plate, which is clipped into place. As ever, speak with your dentist to find the best option for you and your lifestyle.

A dental implant is basically a replacement tooth root and it provides the strongest possible foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth. The implant is a titanium post secured directly in the jaw. The result is a natural look and feel because the implant is designed to fuse with the bone. Unlike bridges, the surrounding teeth remain unaltered by the procedure. Implants can now replace a full set of teeth in a single one-day procedure.

In conclusion, a lost tooth is not the end of the world, or even an end to smiling. Modern dentistry has made it an inconvenience easily fixed. Simply consult your dentist to find the best option to suit your needs.

How City Dental Leeds Provide Dentures as Stable as Natural Teeth

Monday, July 10th, 2017

shutterstock_600802361Dentures can be a wonderful solution for patients with missing teeth, but they can also be problematic. If you’ve had negative experiences with loose or painful dentures, you may be looking for an alternative option. At City Dental Leeds, we pride ourselves on offering the finest treatments out there, and we’re proud to offer dentures as stable as natural teeth. To provide you with dentures that are comfortable, functional, natural looking and stable, we offer denture stabilisation or implant-retained dentures.

What are implant-retained dentures and how could they benefit me?

Implant-retained dentures are prosthetic dentures that are secured in place by dental implants. Implants are small titanium devices, which are designed to integrate into the bone tissue and take on the role of the missing tooth root. When an implant is in place, it provides the new tooth with the same level of support and stability as a natural, healthy tooth root. There’s no risk of a denture slipping or becoming loose, which gives you peace of mind and enables you to enjoy enhanced bite power. You can eat what you like, and you don’t ever have to worry that your denture will cause irritation or sore spots.

We can use a system called All-on-4 to provide same-day smiles or we can anchor dentures using mini dental implants or standard implants. To support the implant, there has to be dense tissue available in the jaw bone. If the tissue is too weak or shallow, mini implants may be recommended, rather than traditional implants. As they are shorter, they are easier to tolerate. All-on-4 is a system that is designed for instant results, and it takes a single day, rather than several months.

If you would like to find out more about implant-retained dentures, call us today and make an appointment. Our friendly dentists will be happy to answer all your questions.

Did You Know We Can Fill Gaps in your Teeth?

Tuesday, April 25th, 2017

shutterstock_423542674Have you got missing teeth or have you recently lost a tooth? We understand that losing a tooth can be distressing, and we have a range of treatments ready and waiting to restore your smile and your confidence. Here are our incredible tooth replacement options:

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are commonly used to replace individual missing teeth, but they can also be used to restore the smile when multiple teeth have been lost. The most common type of bridge is a traditional fixed bridge, which comprises a false tooth, which is fused to a crown on either side. The bridge is custom-designed to fit the gap perfectly, and you can choose from materials, including porcelain, for an incredibly natural aesthetic. We can fit bridges in just two appointments, which are usually held around 2 weeks apart. Bridges are more affordable than implants, but they don’t last as long. Having said that, if you care for your bridge well, you should find that it lasts around 10-15 years.

Dentures are a tried and tested tooth replacement method. They enable you to carry out all the functions you take for granted when you have a set of healthy natural teeth, and they come in partial and full sets. Dentures are bespoke, as every patient is individual, and modern versions are very natural looking and comfortable. Dentures are not a permanent solution, but they can be made quickly, and they enable you to eat, smile and talk with confidence.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the newest kid on the block when it comes to tooth replacement methods. Implants are usually made from titanium, and they replace the root section of your natural tooth. The implant integrates into the jaw bone in the same way as the root, enabling it to offer the same level of stability and anchorage. Once the implant has settled, it can then be attached to a denture, a bridge or a crown. As it is compatible with a diverse range of restorations, the implant is the most versatile option and it can benefit patients with any number of missing teeth.

Revive Your Smile With A Custom Denture

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

758140_blogIf your smile is in need of a bit of reinvigoration this autumn, our custom-made dentures could be just the ticket. If you have missing teeth and you’re looking to inject some style into your smile, our dentures can help to restore and rejuvenate your smile.

We provide custom-made dentures, including partial and complete dentures, to replace lost teeth and enable you to enjoy improved oral function and amazing natural looking aesthetics. With a denture, you can enjoy life as you did with your own teeth; you can smile with confidence, you can eat and enjoy a variety of foods and you can enjoy better facial aesthetics thanks to increased support for the cheeks and lips.

Why choose dentures?

Dentures have been around for many years, but modern dentures are a completely different proposition to the dentures of times gone by. Modern dentures offer incredible levels of functionality and they look more like natural teeth than ever before; they are also designed with comfort in mind and they are made from high quality materials, which provide durability.

We recommend dentures as an effective and reliable treatment for patients with missing teeth. Dentures are readily available, the process is simple and they are much more affordable than dental implants.

What does denture treatment involve?

Dentures are custom-made, so during the consultation stage, we create impressions of the mouth, which are used by highly skilled technicians to create your bespoke dentures. Once your dentures are ready, we will check the fit and then go through some simple instructions for cleaning and maintaining the denture. We will organise regular follow-up sessions to check the fit of your denture and ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.

A Well Fitting Denture Provides Perfect Support

Sunday, October 5th, 2014

2433646_sIf you have multiple missing teeth or a full arch of lost teeth, a denture could be the perfect solution. Dentures are sets of false teeth, which are designed to replace lost natural teeth; with a denture in place, you should be able to enjoy the same benefits as a healthy set of natural teeth, so you can smile with confidence and eat without anxiety or difficulty.

About dentures

Dentures are sometimes given a bad wrote-up, but they have come a long way in a relatively short space of time and modern dentures offer a really impressive alternative to missing teeth. If you have lost a number of teeth, this is likely to affect your ability to speak and eat, as well as your confidence when you smile and dentures provide a solution to these problems.

Dentures are usually made from plastic and acrylic and they are custom-made to fit the contours of your mouth for maximum comfort and the best aesthetics. It’s essential to check dentures regularly because the mouth constantly changes shape and if the denture starts to become loose, this can cause irritation, as well as affecting the function of the denture.

Dentures are held in place by the natural suction power of the gums; however, some people prefer to use a fixative for added stability. It is also possible to have implant-retained dentures, which are dentures that are anchored by dental implants. These dentures are more expensive, but the functionality is equal to natural teeth and there is no risk of a denture slipping or sliding.

All-On-4? It Could Be The Answer To All Your Dental Worries

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

2797271_blogIf you wear dentures and you’ve experienced troubles with slipping and irritation or you have a number of missing teeth and you’re looking for a quick, effective solution, we may have the perfect treatment for you. All-on-4 is an implant system, which delivers results in a single day to put a stop to all your denture and missing teeth woes.

What is All-on-4?

All-on-4 is a same-day implant treatment, which offers a really impressive alternative to traditional denture treatment. With All-on-4, the denture is held in place by dental implants, which gives you much greater security and improves aesthetics and functionality.

All-on-4 is different to traditional implant treatment because it uses just 4 dental implants to anchor a full arch of new teeth and the angles of the implants differ. With this system, there are two implants at the front of the jaw and two at the back. Usually, between 6 and 10 implants are needed to support a full arch and the implants are placed at 90 degree angles; with All-on-4 the back two implants sit at 45 degree angles.

Traditionally, implant treatment takes several months, but All-on-4 is a single-day treatment, which means our patients can enjoy an amazing new smile without delay!

What are the advantages of All-on-4?

All-on-4 offers myriad advantages, from improved facial aesthetics and a beautiful smile, to increased bite power, increased stability and complete peace of mind for patients. With implants there to secure the new teeth, there is no risk of a denture sliding out of place and causing irritation or preventing patients from eating their favourite foods. With All-on-4 the process is simpler and less invasive and the results can be enjoyed immediately, which makes a huge difference to people who have a large number of missing teeth.

If you’d like to find out if you’re a suitable candidate for this treatment, call us or bob in and see us if you’re heading into central Leeds.

Discover The Convenience Of Mini-Dental Implants

Monday, August 4th, 2014

2607696_blogA lot is known about the stability that full size dental implants provide but not as many people are aware of the smaller variety – mini dental implants. They are really great for patients unable to cope with full sized dental implants through lack of bone density. Mini-implants can help you smile with confidence once more.

Mini dental implants

Made from titanium, just like regular dental implants, they act as a replacement for the root of your tooth. Different types of dental restorations can be held in place securely by mini implants but they are most commonly used to secure dentures in place.

Traditional dentures are only secured in place through suction and can be painful and discouraging for some. Mini implant retained dentures erase discomfort, allowing you to enjoy your food as you would with your natural teeth.

The benefits

If you love food, and don’t want to experience the embarrassment of your denture falling out as you speak or eat then mini dental implant retained dentures could be for you. They don’t  cover the roof of the mouth like traditional dentures to be held in place. This means you can enjoy your favourite foods and maintain your dignity without any fear of the dentures falling out. This stability is key to many City Leeds patients dental well being.

Mini Implants Offer Leeds An Alternative Smile

Friday, June 13th, 2014

3177025_blogMini dental implants are a smaller version of the hugely popular dental implant treatment; they are often suitable for patients who cannot tolerate full implants and also provide an excellent option for patients with dentures.

Mini implants work in the same way as dental implants, but they are smaller and therefore easier to tolerate. In some cases, patients are advised against having full implants, but often they are suitable candidates for mini implants; this is often the case when there is a lack of bone density in the jaw bone.

What are the advantages of mini implants?

Mini implants offer the same benefits of traditional implants in that they provide great, natural looking aesthetics, they offer durability and they are extremely functional, but the procedure is less invasive and results can be enjoyed faster.

Mini implants are often an ideal choice for patients who have dentures, as the implants can be attached to the denture to offer greater stability and improved function. Rather than being held in place purely by the suction power of the gums, the denture is supported by the implants and this means that there is absolutely no risk of it slipping or sliding. With implants there to stabilise the denture, you can also enjoy more power when you eat and no foods are off limits.

If you’ve had trouble with dentures in the past or you are looking for a long-term, effective solution for missing teeth, call us today to find out more about mini implants.
