You, Fluoride and Leeds

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Fluoride is one of those minerals that’s considered to be the saving grace for your teeth and is able stave off tooth decay in Leeds. A lot of this is true; fluoride is considered to be very good for giving strength to the enamel in teeth and helps in the eternal fight against tooth decay. You can also find it everywhere; the water systems are full of fluoride and you’ll find it in most toothpastes that you buy in shops around the city, so it must be good for you if it is so widespread? However, it has also become one of those things that have started to become questioned throughout dental circles. Though it has been used for almost a hundred years, it is only recently, through modern technology and a better understanding of things, that it is also considered to be quite damaging as well. It is a toxic mineral and too much use of it can be very dangerous. Children tend to swallow more toothpaste than need be and this can result in death. Fluoride also builds up in the bloodstream and in the brain, and this can lead to a condition called fluorosis- disturbing considering that it plays a major part in our live. However, this also seems like someone somewhere is starting to hit the ‘PC button’ again. We live on average to an age of 80 something. If it was proven that the removal of fluoride from our lives could double our longevity, then there may well be a cause for banning it; but it doesn’t. We are all free to make informed choices, but it is also good to be practical as well.
