Expert Advice on Protecting Your Mouth from Injury

Wednesday, July 6th, 2016

2112592_blogYour mouth can be at risk in a number of situations and severely injuring your teeth and gums can be painful and require invasive surgery to rectify.  If you indulge in physical sports such as rugby, lacrosse or American football, or enjoy mountain biking or gymnastics, it is best if you wear a mouth guard to protect your teeth.  By doing so you lessen your chances of breaking, chipping or even losing a tooth.

Basic mouth guards

The most basic level of protection is offered by stock mouth guards that you can buy in sports shops. These are affordable but won’t protect your mouth comprehensively from all threats. As they are not tailor-made, they can often be uncomfortable to wear. So called ‘boil and bite’ mouth guards are more comfortable because you can mould them to your mouth by biting them when they have been submerged in boiling water and become malleable.

Custom-made mouth guards

By far the best protection that you can give your teeth if you are participating in a physical sport is to get your dentist to fit you a mouth guard.  Moulds of your teeth will be taken so that impressions can then be formed.  From these impressions a technician will fabricate your own personalised mouth guard.  These are far more comfortable to wear.

It is better to spend the small amount of money on a mouth guard than to sustain a painful injury that might require expensive surgery to rectify in any case.

Sunday, February 17th, 2013

If you are of an active nature and love to get stuck into your sports at the weekends in the city of Leeds, then you also need to be responsible and protect yourself as much as you can from injury, especially to the mouth. Damage here can be costly and complex to put right; not only are your teeth and gums vulnerable, but if you insist in playing on unprotected, damage to your mouth can also lead to injury throughout your head, your neck and upper back. All sports are different, so if you are dead keen to keep playing, you really need to get a bespoke mouth-guard to take the shocks and bangs that your sport is likely to throw at it and your first stop should be your dentists for some advice on full protection for your mouth. You can go cheaper and buy off the shelf and though not as affect as having one made for you, it will at least help to protect you. Dentistry also uses mouth-guard styled devices in various procedures. Some aligners wrap around the teeth like a guard, as do bleaching trays for teeth whitening, but you will also be supplied with a mouth-guard if you suffer from excessive teeth grinding.

Dealing with Sensitive Teeth in the City of Leeds

Friday, June 29th, 2012

There are quite a few reasons why we suffer from sensitive teeth in the city of Leeds, but the results are always the same- mainly great discomfort and it can cause a lot of problems in our everyday lives. The most common cause is done by overzealous brushing with abrasive toothpastes that wears away at the teeth’s enamel and then gets into the nerves. The build-up of plaque can lead to acid erosion and then tooth decay and gum disease which again, break down the enamel. Grinding and over-stated tooth bleaching also have the same affects. The first way to overcome this is to pay a visit to the dentist who can rectify any decay with a filling or a root canal. Then you can have fluoride treatments or even a sealant fitted to help protect the surfaces of the teeth; those who grind their teeth can have a mouth-guard made up. Outside of the dentists, it is down to you to help quell the sensitivity; for a start you can use a softer brush and find yourself a good de-sensitizing toothpaste. Fluoride mouth-washes are also excellent at re-mineralizing the enamel in the teeth and protecting the nerves.
