Why It’s Important to Wear a Retainer

Monday, April 4th, 2016

2445507_blogIt is normal protocol to be fitted with retainers after your braces have been removed. The primary function of retainers is to ensure that the teeth do not move back to their original position. After the braces have been removed the teeth will still be relatively fresh in their new position, so they will still require more time to become fixed in place while the gums heal.

In the case of children, a retainer is vitally important due to the fact that children grow quite rapidly. If they have had their braces removed the gums and teeth will continue to change, so a retainer will keep the teeth in their desired position.

Most retainers are removable and can be taken out with relative ease. This can be very beneficial to the wearer, particularly if they have been used to wearing braces. The removable function of retainers means that you can take them out during meals, photographs, business presentations etc.

It is usually advised that retainers are kept in for a minimum amount of time (which will be advised by your dentist). The approximate time that most retainers should stay in is twenty to twenty two hours. The length of time for wearing a retainer varies but it can be for one year.

The retainer should be a comfortable fit. If the retainer has been issued after braces treatment then the teeth should already be in position so there is no need to continue the movement of teeth, therefore the fit should not cause any discomfort.

Retainers possess a lot of importance in orthodontic procedures. It can be devastating and quite traumatic if a person suffers a relapse. The sheer thought of having to go through all the treatment again is enough to help people realise the vital necessity of retainers.

The Fantastic Choice Of Braces In Central Leeds

Sunday, September 2nd, 2012

If you having to have a brace or aligner fitted to correct the bite of your mouth and retain and prolong the health of your mouth for the future, then you should first shop around before jumping in because there are some fantastic options around in central Leeds today that will get the job done quickly and discreetly. If it’s speed you are looking for, then there are braces around that can get the job done from upwards of 6 weeks: some are self-ligating (tightening) and keep the teeth on the move all of the time; others have to be tightened by your dentist, but in either case, the job is over with fast. For the ultimate in discretion though, there are some aligners from America that are fast, removable, and being made from transparent materials, almost invisible in the mouth as well. Now not all of these braces fit everyone- we are all different, so you will need to be analysed first in order to find one that fits your condition. In complex cases though, you may have no option but to go for the more traditional route- but take heart from this because your teeth will be moved delicately and precisely, and considering this will only happen once in your life, get it over with because your smile will be beautiful in the end.
