What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are made from a titanium alloy and are fixed into your jawbone to replace the root of your tooth while supporting crowns or dentures. The procedure is painless and takes place under local anaesthetic. During the process a hole is made in your jawbone to perfectly accommodate the implant, then the implant is left to heal for up to 6 months. We provide you with temporary teeth during this time while the process of osseointegration – bone tissue growing around the implant – takes place. The procedure usually takes between 1-2 hours per implant and you may need a couple of days off work following your visit.
What is bone grafting?
For implant placement to be successful there needs to be a sufficient quantity of bone in the area, however in some patients this just isn’t the case, often because of how gums have healed following tooth extraction. To increase the amount of bone available simple grafting procedures are carried out using either endogenous bone or artificial substitutes. These techniques usually take place at the same time as implant placement.

In comparison to conventional methods such as dentures and bridges, dental implants offer better support, result in much more comfort and even help to slow down and prevent jawbone shrinkage. The success rate is high – between 90-95% – and if looked after properly dental implants can last forever. Despite coming at a higher cost than conventional treatments, they are definitely a worthwhile investment.
