Computer aided design, computer aided manufacturing…..bit of a mouthful and probably for most people in central Leeds, you wouldn’t have a clue what it is. But for a dentist, it is one of the most innovative technologies ever to hit the dental surgery and for the patient, well, how do you fancy getting some cosmetic/restorative work done within the hour? That’s the beauty about this technology, everything is in-house, even the manufacture of your fitting, so you no longer have to wait a couple of weeks for your bits to be sourced at a lab miles away, the fitting is made whilst you wait. Let’s just say you want a veneer; you turn up at the dentist and have your tooth prepared, your mouth is then scanned and the information is fed into a computer that then designs your fitting. Following onto this, this design is then fed into a milling machine which then manufactures your fitting from a small block made from either ceramic, composite resin, porcelain or zirconium. Once complete, the veneer can be cemented into place and if there are any problems, they can be corrected there and then. This technology can be used for lots of other restorative work as well from dental crowns and crown-lays to bridges, implant restorations and some orthodontic appliances.
