It is lovely to be young and immortal….that is until of these extremities catch up with you and you are diagnosed with oral cancer. It will never be easy, but if you have the support of friends and family and a good after-care team, AND if you are prepared to stop doing the things that got you here in this pickle in the first place, there is no reason why you shouldn’t make a complete recovery and live out your life.

The good and bad of Fluoride in the City of Leeds

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Though you might not know it, the drinking water that is pumped in houses in the city of Leeds will contain fluoride and the reasoning behind this is firstly, this mineral lowers the risk of bacteria getting into the water and secondly it has always been the belief that fluoride is a healthy way of keeping the enamel of the teeth strong, therefore fending off tooth decay. This is very true, fluoride does make the enamel stronger and more resistant to bacteria and acids that affect the teeth; it is why most toothpaste that you buy contains it and why dentists will administer fluoride treatments if you are suffering with poor teeth: fluoride has been used for a good hundred years in dental treatments. But that was due to the fact that everyone went along with it and never once questioned it either- they trusted in the powers to be. Now though, questions are being raised about its use because it has come to light that actually, it isn’t the great saving grace that it was once portrayed to be and that it is quite toxic. Too much of the stuff can lead to a condition called fluorosis, where deposits build up in the brain and ironically, cause discoloration in the enamel of the teeth. It is well known that fluoride toothpaste shouldn’t be left in the hands of children for they like the taste and tend to consume more than they actually use and in some cases, this can be fatal. It is a hard call to say whether or not it should be used daily and you should do your research before coming to an informed decision about fluoride.

Stopping the Grinding in your Sleep in Leeds

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

If ever there was a more destructive condition that emanates from your mouth, it is grinding your teeth and the consequences are quite frightening. Stress can creep up on you in a vibrant, hectic and demanding city such as Leeds and without noticing it- it will manifest itself through the way you clench your teeth, either through anger or stress. You will also take this action to bed with you if you can’t chill-out beforehand, you will be damaging your jaw-joints no end through grinding and it doesn’t stop there: constant grinding can spread through your head causing migraines and tinnitus, and then work its way through your neck, threatening your nervous system before affecting your upper back. If you pay regular visits to your dentist, the wear and tear will be picked up on quickly and your dentist can supply you with a guard to protect your teeth from damage. But that isn’t the cure to the problem- you need some form of therapy. Anger and stress management is essential here in order to identify the problems that you have during the day, and then hopefully, teach you how to take time to relax and forget work related problems when you get home. Remember, solving the problems of tooth grinding at the start can very well save your life in the future.

Cleaning your Teeth with Braces in Central Leeds

Monday, April 15th, 2013

If it isn’t hard enough being fitted with awkward fixed brace to straighten your teeth in central Leeds, you then have to go through the ordeal of keeping them clean, and this can be quite complex throughout your treatment. Food is a real issue here because it can so easily get caught up in the wires and linger forever if you don’t get rid of it and the consequences can be horrific- gum disease and tooth decay love rotting food. When you are first fitted with a brace, your dentist will be there to help with your cleaning problems, but also, should advise you how to do things and even start you off with the tools to do the job. Dental floss and inter-dental brushes are very important to cleaning in and around a brace and though it may take a while to master, persevere, because we are talking about your oral health here. Mouthwashes are always fabulous for killing off bacteria and flushing out food. You also have the added bonus that you can buy dyes that will highlight any signs of plaque building up around your teeth. But if you have any problems at all, always get back to your dentist if you feel you are not happy and getting things wrong.

The dangers of ignoring a Tooth Abscess in Leeds

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Complications come and go in the mouth, yet by popping along to see your dentist in Leeds, most can be sorted out quite easily, but this is not the case with a tooth abscess. When an abscess erupts, it starts to mess with the whole of your body; your face will swell uncontrollably and your mouth will be in severe pain once the problem blows up. During all this, the abscess will leak poison into the bloodstream and this is where the condition becomes dangerous, because these toxins will bleed into the brain and in some cases, it can put you into a coma and a life threatening situation. It all starts with poor oral hygiene which leads to tooth decay; once the inside of your tooth has been infected, it has nowhere to go and will then infect the surrounding gum tissue, causing a build up of poison and hence, lead to the abscess. Take no chances with this and if you can’t get hold of your dentist, get to the hospital, because you need to be pumped full of antibiotics to prevent things from going further. Only then can your dentist get to work on the tooth by doing a root canal to clear the infection from within the tooth. However, by getting your first abscess, it means that you have opened a portal to hell: abscesses don’t back down and they have a habit of coming back and if they do, the only way you can stop yourself treading dangerously again is to have the tooth removed.

How to care for your Children’s Mouths in Central Leeds

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Looking after your children’s teeth in central Leeds is always going to be a complex

time as they grow; there are so many things to think about and so many things that can go wrong, which is why you will need help from a dentist and, in the early years, a paediatrician. The moment you’re your child’s teeth start to break through, they are vulnerable to infection and tooth decay and this is where a paediatrician can help. As they get older, your child will then go through the transition from milk to secondary teeth, again, a tricky period, because if you get this right, you may avoid the problems of orthodontic treatments and remember, these are the teeth that will be with your child for life (hopefully, they will be cleaning their own teeth properly as well). By now, a dentist should be on board and there to check and monitor the growth of the teeth. One huge problem though is that your child will be away at school each day at this point, eating and enjoying the delights of sugar in sweets and chocolate when you have your back turned; a remedy to this if you are unsure about what your kid is up to is to have them fitted with dental sealants which will protect them from tooth decay. Orthodontic treatment may or may not follow so up to this point, so, one hopes that you have planned for paying for all this from the start. It is never going to be easy, so you should seek advice from a dentist about all of these topics so that you cover all eventualities before your kids are even born.

Overcoming Tooth Loss in the City of Leeds

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

When tooth loss strikes, it is wise to strike back and plug up the gaps for many reasons. The health of your mouth can be under threat from tooth loss; infection can quickly set it and teeth around the space can start to move and affect the way you look when you smile. One of the more traditional remedies to tooth loss is a dental bridge; this has been used for decades in the city of Leeds and although it has proved itself in the past as being very reliable, it has got even better since mini implants have been used in the treatment. There were quite a few options in the past that would involve the use of wires and resins to bond the new tooth to the surrounding teeth and this option is still available, but the more popular one was a tooth moulded between two crowns and then cemented onto surrounding teeth, and with the help of an implant, this bridge has rather superseded the other methods. Once the bridge is in, it will be strong and if you ensure that you look after it, it will last you for a good couple of decades: notoriously, they can be hard to keep clean because food can easily get caught up below, but your dentist will help you in the beginning and supply you with the tools to do the job and once you have got the hang of it, a bridge will give you great service.

Leeds and the Custom Bleaching Tray

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

There is no question about the way teeth whitening has captured the imagination of the people of Leeds: this is a way of getting a smile that you see people having in all walks of the media everyday. There are many ways you can go about it, but one of the more popular options flying around right now is DIY bleaching kits; people seem keener to go it alone these days. Contained in these kits will be a bleaching agent, a set of instructions…and bleaching trays. The trays are very important to the process so if you want to try this method either through a kit you have bought in the shops or a treatment supplied via your dentist, getting a custom made tray could be beneficial to you when bleaching at home. Pop along and talk to your dentist about having one made up for you: all that you have to do is to sit in the chair and have a mould taken of your teeth, which will then be sent away so that your trays can be made. The advantage of doing this is that the trays will fit you with precision and will hold the bleaching agent against your teeth safely, without the fear on the bleach leaking into your mouth, especially if you’re using it in your sleep.

How Dentures work for you in Central Leeds

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

It is pretty safe to say that anything that you have done at the dentists, from braces to cosmetic procedures such as crowns, every treatment veers towards protecting one thing- your occlusion (bite). This is how your jaws come together and as long as this is kept true, it will save you from more dangerous conditions developing all over your upper body. It is also why you should have a tooth/teeth replaced if lost. Dentures have been around in central Leeds for decades and although they haven’t had the best of press over the years, they do a job. However they have gone through quite a renaissance of late and dare it be said, are coming back in vogue again. This is because better treatments of gum disease has reduced tooth loss so that now, people are opting for cheap, great looking partial dentures as opposed to other options; they are easy to manage and they are really low maintenance- they also bond to the mouth and surrounding teeth very well indeed. Full dentures too have had a makeover: more superior, natural-looking materials, better adhesives and the mini-implant have made full dentures much easier and more reliable to wear. Tooth loss is never easy and can be quite tough to handle, but it is lovely to know that dentures are an option, are very viable, cheap and a quick way of overcoming the problem.

Understanding the causes of Bad Breath in the City of Leeds

Monday, April 8th, 2013

If you are suffering from bad breath in the city of Leeds, you could badly be affecting your potential: it won’t work for you socially with others and it certainly won’t work for you in the workplace either and whether it bothers you or not, you should really make an attempt to remedy the situation; not only is it offensive to others, but it also indicates that your health may be at risk and something is terribly wrong somewhere in the body. Firstly, you should talk to your dentist so that you can be checked for gum disease and tooth decay and if you are suffering from such conditions, you can then be patched up. Then it’s time to talk to a hygienist: the causes of bad breath are many so between you, you can make a list of the causes and then go through them one by one. On this list will be the issues of diet, lifestyle and oral hygiene and as you go through it all, you can identify things that you are doing wrong and then set out a plan to change them for the better and within weeks, if you change your ways, your breath should improve if you follow the script; it won’t be easy and you will have to work hard at it, but it will be worth it in the end and you will at least get your friends back. The danger though is, if after all these changes the condition persists, you may well have to see a doctor for some tests, for there may well be something more serious going on with your body.
