What You Didn’t Know About Dental Implants

November 2nd, 2016

Dental implantsIf you’re not familiar with advances in the world of dentistry, you may never have even heard of dental implants. If you have missing teeth, learning about implants could be the best thing you ever do. These revolutionary dental devices have already changed thousands of lives. You could be next! If you’re unfamiliar with dental implants, here is some information you may find useful.

What exactly is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a prosthetic device made from titanium. Implants are placed inside sockets in the jawbone; titanium is used because it is a biocompatible material. This enables the implant to integrate into the bone tissue. The implant takes on the role of the tooth root. Once it is in place, it anchors the tooth, enabling you to enjoy a healthy new smile.

Implants are the most versatile tooth replacement treatment out there

If you’re not up to speed with implants, you may not realise that they are the most versatile tooth replacement treatment out there. Unlike bridges and dentures, dental implants are suitable for most patients with missing teeth. An implant is compatible with different types of restoration. This means that you can benefit from implants whether you’re missing a single tooth or several teeth. Once the implant has integrated into the bone, it can be attached to a crown, bridge or denture.

Implants are built to last

Implants may be the most expensive way of replacing natural teeth. But they also offer the best value for money. This is because they are built to last for several years. Bridges and dentures are both temporary solutions. With implants, you can rest assured that your beautiful new smile will last.

Implant treatment can change your life overnight

Implants really can change your life and with systems like All-on-4, you can enjoy an overnight transformation. This innovative treatment replaces missing teeth in a single session, so you don’t have to wait to show off your new smile. All-on-4 uses four implants to anchor an entire arch of new teeth. If you have multiple missing teeth and you’re eager for rapid results, this could be the solution you’ve been searching for. Ask our friendly team for more details!

The Rise of Cosmetic Dentistry

October 28th, 2016

White smileMany people are deciding that their dental health needs improving. This could be choosing to have a filling they were unsure of having due to one reason or the other, or finally booking an appointment with their dentist which they were avoiding from going to. But lots of people have also decided to improve the way their teeth look.

Cosmetic dentistry and its many forms

Our teeth were born natural white and looked unbelievably healthy in our school photos. However, whether this is thanks to drinking coffee or consuming tobacco products, they change colour and develop a yellowish tinge, which is not to everyone’s liking. With teeth whitening products that have instantaneous results, this very popular dental treatment is increasing in popularity all the time.

The other types of cosmetic dentistry

As well as teeth whitening, there are also veneers. Applied to the front of a person’s tooth using very strong glue, they make the tooth look white, unlike its previous colour. If one tooth is discoloured, this can help change the colour of this singular tooth.

Unlike their silver versions, white fillings blend in with the natural colour of the tooth, which can make any filling present in the tooth literally invisible. Silver fillings are prone to staining surrounding teeth but white fillings do not do this and leaves the tooth looking as natural as possible.

One more to consider

Just like white fillings when compared to silver fillings, Invisalign offer a person the chance to have braces without the metallic “train track” brace, which is very noticeable and might affect a person’s confidence. Invisalign technology uses clear aligners to straighten the teeth which allows for the confidence of the person to improve, as they won’t be self-conscious of having a metallic brace attached to the front of their teeth.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

October 26th, 2016

2839654_blogUnfortunately, dental emergencies are fairly common, so it’s advisable to learn how to act in an emergency situation.

Examples of dental emergencies

Examples of dental emergencies include broken teeth, avulsed teeth (teeth that have been knocked out), jaw injuries and severe dental pain.

If you are involved in an accident and you lose a tooth or your tooth is badly broken, it is advisable to contact your dentist as quickly as possible. In some cases, if you can get to the practice very quickly, it may be possible to save an avulsed tooth. If you have lost a tooth, try to wipe it clean while holding it by the crown at all times and then place it between your gum and the inside of your cheek or in a glass of milk.

If you have a broken tooth, you may need urgent treatment to repair it and prevent any further damage. When you see your dentist, it is likely that they will order an X-ray to determine the extent of the damage and identify the best course of action.

Dental pain can be very severe and it may come on very suddenly. If you have serious dental pain, contact your dentist. It may be that you have an infection or an abscess that requires treatment. If you have bearable yet persistent toothache, arrange to see your dentist as dental pain usually indicates an underlying issue, such as a cavity.

Emergency appointments

We always try to cater for patients with dental emergencies as quickly as possible. If you need urgent treatment, contact the practice and we will do everything we can to see you and treat the problem swiftly. If you suffer a jaw injury, such as a fractured jaw, you will need medical attention, so visit your local Accident and Emergency department.

Why You Should Check-In for a Check-Up

October 24th, 2016

shutterstock_51615943Did you know that tooth decay is one of the most common preventable problems around? Both children and adults can fall victim to a cavity, but seeing your dentist every six to nine months can stop those nasty little holes in their tracks. If tooth decay isn’t treated, you might end up having to have root canal treatment or even lose a tooth!

It’s easy to assume that if you don’t have any dental pain, your teeth are A-okay. But there might be tiny problems you can’t see, and these can lead to massive issues later on in life. Many dental problems fall under the radar until it’s too late. Visiting your dentist every six months can make sure these problems stay well away from your mouth.

A typical check-up won’t last longer than 15 minutes. Your dentist will have a good look at your mouth, teeth and gums and ask you about your oral health. They might also offer some pearls about eating habits and damaging habits like smoking and drinking, both of which can take their toll on our choppers. Your dentist might also give you some top brushing tips so you can keep on top of your oral hygiene.

If you need one, your dentist might schedule you in for a follow up appointment for a filling, deep clean or scale and polish.

Going to the dentist might not seem like the most thrilling 15 minutes of your life, but we can’t stress enough how important check-ups are. It helps to spot problems in their early stages and treat issues you didn’t even know you had. When it comes to your mouth, prevention is always better than cure.

The Amazing Benefits of Lingual Braces

October 20th, 2016

shutterstock_155143142One of the main reasons some people are reluctant to have orthodontic treatment is the aesthetic of braces. Train-track fixed braces are highly effective, but they are also highly visible and this puts a lot of people off. Thankfully, there are some amazing discreet options now available for patients with orthodontic issues. One option that provides a truly invisible alternative to fixed braces is lingual orthodontics. We are delighted to offer clients the revolutionary STb Social 6 brace system.

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces are fixed braces with a difference! Far from being unsightly and inconvenient, lingual braces are completely invisible because they are fixed to the back of the teeth instead of the front.

This type of brace is lighter and smaller than conventional fixed braces and they can be worn on the top and bottom teeth. They are a popular option for adults who want to have treatment without anyone being able to see that they’re wearing braces.

About STb Social 6 braces

STb Social 6 is a lingual brace system designed for patients with minor orthodontic issue. The braces focus on the social 6, which is the term used to describe the six teeth at the front of the mouth.

These braces are comfortable, completely invisible and very speedy. In most cases, treatment is complete within 4-6 months, making this one of the quickest treatments available. The wires are thin and light and they use self-ligating technology to accelerate the movement of the teeth and reduce friction and discomfort.

If you want to find out more or see if you’re a suitable candidate for STb Social 6 lingual braces, call the practice to arrange a consultation in central Leeds.

What is Dry Socket?

October 18th, 2016

shutterstock_297068462If you’ve had a tooth taken out, you might have experienced an uncomfortable condition called dry socket. This happens in around 5% of tooth extractions, when the bone has been exposed. Dry socket can be very painful, but staying in touch with the dentist that extracted your tooth will reduce your risk of dry socket and make sure you can get it treated if it does strike.

When does dry socket occur?

If you do get dry socket, it’ll probably hit you during the first few days after you’ve had your tooth removed. There’s bound to be a bit of discomfort after having a tooth taken out, but dry socket is especially uncomfortable. Your blood should clot after a tooth extraction, but if it doesn’t, the bone will be exposed and this can make you very sensitive to food, drink and even the air you breathe.

What causes it?

Smoking is a big one for disturbing the post-extraction blood clot, as is drinking through a straw. Blood clotting can also be affected by immunosuppressive drugs and birth control pills. If you take any of these, ask your dentist for advice when discussing your tooth extraction.

How is dry socket treated?

Luckily, dry socket can be dealt with easily by applying special medication to the area and carrying on with your oral hygiene routine. Always follow your dentist’s advice after having a tooth removed.

Stunning Smiles with STb Social 6 Braces

October 14th, 2016

18625010Have you ever dreamt of an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth in secret? Well now your dreams can come true, thanks to STb Social 6 braces. These innovative braces sit behind the back of your teeth, so they are totally invisible to everyone else!

The ins and outs of STb Social 6 braces

STb Social 6 braces are a lingual brace, which means that they are fixed onto the back side of the teeth. This system is specifically designed to fix problems with the social 6. The social 6 is the name used to describe the teeth positioned at the front of the mouth (the six front teeth on the top and bottom arches), which are most visible when you smile.

STb Social 6 braces are a really effective solution for patients who have minor or moderate orthodontic issues with the front teeth and they offer a speedy, invisible alternative to traditional fixed orthodontic systems. With these braces, you can enjoy the benefits of a beautiful, straight smile without having to deal with many of the issues commonly linked with wearing braces, such as feeling self-conscious when you smile.

Do lingual braces hurt?

It’s understandable to assume that these braces must cause discomfort because there is limited space between the tongue and the back of the teeth. However, lingual braces are a lot smaller than traditional braces and these braces use the latest technology to prevent friction and pain. As with any brace, it does take a little time to familiarise your mouth with wearing STb Social 6 braces, but most patients find them very comfortable after a couple of days.

The benefits of lingual braces

The most obvious benefit of lingual braces is that they can’t be seen when you smile or speak, so nobody need know that you are even wearing braces. STb Social 6 braces are also very quick, with an average treatment time of just 4-6 months and they are comfortable and light. The treatment process is very simple; once the braces have been fitted, you simply sit back and let them work their magic. We will organise regular check-ups until treatment is complete and your smile looks fantastic.

Terrific Tooth Bonding

October 12th, 2016

Beautiful young lady smilingTooth bonding uses a thin layer of filling made from composite resin. This can be bonded to teeth at the front or back, with the ability to build up teeth worn down by decay, fill small gaps, and to cosmetically correct such imperfections as stains, flaws and crookedness. It is a relatively long lasting treatment and the bonding is accomplished quickly for maximum effect within one or two appointments.

The presence of minor gaps or small but noticeable unevenness between teeth can be irritating for many people, and they may not wish to consider braces or other slow-working aligners to treat these problems. Tooth bonding is a simple way to close small gaps and cover imperfections, including chips, gum recession, discoloration and grooves or pits in the teeth, to boost confidence and create a more attractive smile. The treatment also boasts discretion and naturalness, as the colour of the material is matched to the patient’s teeth.

A thin coat of etching solution is carefully applied to the front surface of the imperfect teeth. This makes tiny rough dips in the enamel and thus enables the resin to bond properly. The dentist then adds the composite resin bonding substance over the top and uses a strong light to fix the bonding to the teeth, hardening the material in minutes. When all necessary layers are complete and hardened, the dentist skilfully sculpts for the best and most natural looking results. The teeth are finished with polishing, and the procedure should last between 1 and 2 hours.

The bonding material is porous, which means that air can move freely through the material. In time, smokers who have undergone this procedure will find that these bonds are likely to turn yellow in colour. This may not be a problem if the surrounding teeth match this colour, but if aesthetic considerations are important then smokers should first talk to their dentist about this issue.

Regular silver fillings generally last for approximately 7 years, but the resin composites are designed for strength and so endure general wears and tears. The bonding should last between 7 and 11 years, though it is important to note that, as with all cosmetic dentistry treatments, maintaining your own oral hygiene habits is paramount in keeping the bonding in the best condition.
