Cosmetic Treatments to Suit all Your Dental Needs

September 2nd, 2016

Beautiful young lady smilingAt City Dental Leeds, we offer an array of cosmetic dental treatments and provide corrective treatment for issues such as chips, staining and gummy smiles, as well as makeovers to bring about a more dramatic transformation.

About cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is an area of dentistry that focuses on the physical appearance of the smile. The aim of treatment is to improve the way the smile looks and this may involve correcting aesthetic issues or enhancing the natural look of the teeth.

Although cosmetic dentistry doesn’t offer oral health benefits, it can have a very positive impact on confidence, especially in cases where people have experienced a lack of confidence as a direct result of aesthetic dental issues in the past. If you’ve struggled with problems such as staining, or you’ve hidden your smile away because you don’t like your crooked or chipped teeth, cosmetic dentistry can really make a difference.

Cosmetic dentistry at City Dental

We have a team of experienced dentists who have expertise in designing and creating stunning smiles. Our amazing selection of treatments makes dental dreams a reality.

Our treatments include:

  • Teeth whitening: we offer professional whitening to give your smile a beautiful shine.
  • Cosmetic bonding: this simple and painless procedure achieves incredible results in just an hour and involves using dental composite to fill in chips and create evenly shaped, attractive teeth. This is a great option for those looking for a quick fix for chips, worn edges, misshapen teeth and gaps between the teeth.
  • Porcelain veneers: veneers create beautiful, natural looking smiles and they are strong and hard-wearing. They are also stain-resistant, so the results are long-lasting.
  • White fillings: if you have a cavity, we can use a white filing to restore and protect your tooth without any aesthetic impact. We can also replace old metal fillings with white fillings.
  • Porcelain crowns: dental crowns offer amazing restorative benefits, but porcelain crowns can also really enhance the look of the tooth to create a more attractive smile.

A Healthy Diet for Beautifully Healthy Teeth

August 26th, 2016

2370471_sThe foods you eat can actually have a big impact on how your mouth looks and feels. Our mouths convert sugar into acid, which then attacks our tooth enamel and this can lead to mean old tooth decay. Whenever we eat, we expose our teeth to the possibility of decay, but of course we need to eat to fuel our bodies! There are some delicious foods that are good for your teeth, so you can still enjoy your grub without compromising your teeth.

Tooth-friendly treats

Calcium is a big enamel-protector and you can find it in meats (especially chicken), cheese, milk and nuts. Crisp fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots are good for your teeth because they’re full of water, so their natural sugars aren’t as harmful. These crunchy delights also help your mouth to produce saliva, which helps to keep tooth decay at bay by washing cheeky bits of food debris from your teeth. Acidic citrus fruits are good for you, but make sure you eat them as part of a meal with other healthy foods, because their high acid content can be harmful to your teeth.

Drinks-wise, milk and water are your teeth’s best friends.

Enamel enemies

And now for the baddies. Hard sweets like lollipops and other sugary sinners like cakes and biscuits are not so good for our teeth. As well as being packed with sugar, these foods can be sticky and make a good breeding ground for bad bacteria. Be careful with cough sweets too!

When it comes to drinks, try and avoid sugary, fizzy drinks, coffee and sweetened tea. Sipping sugary drinks throughout the day is a recipe for disaster because that will just expose your teeth to potential damage all day long. Coffee and red wine can stain your teeth, so you might want to watch out there too.

The Incredible Inman Aligner

August 24th, 2016

18625044We are delighted to offer our patients a range of innovative orthodontic treatments, including the incredible Inman Aligner. If you have minor orthodontic issues and are searching for an effective, swift and comfortable treatment option, look no further than the Inman Aligner.

What is the Inman Aligner?

The Inman Aligner is a removable orthodontic appliance that exerts forces that squeeze the teeth, causing them to move in the right direction. The aligner slips into position over the teeth and is designed to be taken out when you eat and clean your teeth. Forces are generated by a coiled spring, located behind the front teeth and a thin metal bar, which can be seen running along the front of the teeth.

Who is a good candidate for Inman Aligner treatment?

Ideally, this treatment is suited to patients who have minor issues, such as crowding or crooked teeth, that involve the teeth at the front of the mouth. It is capable of achieving a small amount of movement in no time at all and presents a great option for those who need minor correction, as well as patients who have experienced relapse after previous treatment.

If you have complex issues that require a lot more movement, the Inman Aligner might not be the best choice for you. Once we have assessed your needs, we will be happy to go through treatment choices with you and help you to choose a more suitable option.

How long does treatment take?

If you’re in a hurry for results, have got a special date in mind or you simply can’t wait to show off your new smile, we have great news! This treatment is one of the fastest systems around, with an average treatment time of just 16 weeks. The exact time may vary slightly and your dentist will be able to give you an accurate prediction when you have your consultation.

Family-Friendly Dentistry

August 22nd, 2016

318711_blogChildren’s dentistry

Dental care is really important for children and the sooner children are introduced to a dentist, the better. We love having children around and our team is really friendly. Our dentists have experience in caring for little ones and they do their utmost to entertain children, reassure them and answer any questions they have. We know that some kids feel very apprehensive about seeing a dentist and we are able to use different techniques to make sure that children feel comfortable and relaxed.

Regular check-ups are a really effective way of reducing the risk of a child developing gum disease and cavities and they allow dentists to keep tabs on any problems and resolve any issues very early before they start to cause pain and unwanted hassle. As well as routine appointments, we also offer preventative dental treatments to protect the teeth and help keep decay at bay.

Family dentistry

We understand that often, time is a luxury and we offer family appointments to enable you to bring everyone together and save you from having to worry about childcare or finding the time to arrange a number of separate sessions. We aim to promote healthy smiles for all our patients and we recommend six monthly check-ups.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic issues are very common and we tend to spot the signs early on. Often, the best course of action is to intervene when children are still fairly young, at around the age of 12-16 years old, as the results tend to be very pleasing and early treatment prevents children from suffering unnecessarily.

We also offer adult orthodontic treatment and the range of systems is increasing all the time, so we are able to offer discreet, quick and comfortable treatments.

Get Wise About Wisdom Teeth!

August 18th, 2016

18625010Many people groan when others mention the words ‘wisdom teeth’, and sometimes they have good reason. For some, the wisdom teeth don’t cause any problems, but occasionally they can be very troublesome and if this is the case, extraction may be recommended.

A bit about wisdom teeth

The wisdom teeth are so-called because they develop in adult life when we are supposed to be wise, but they are also known as the third molars. These are the last teeth to erupt and there are four in total, with one located in each corner of the mouth. In some cases, the wisdom teeth develop without causing any discomfort at all, but often they are painful because there is not enough space for them to grow properly. If this is the case, the teeth can start to grow at an angle and push against the neighbouring teeth. This is known as an impacted tooth.

Why would I need my wisdom tooth extracted?

If your tooth is impacted or it has become decayed, the best course of action may be to remove the tooth. Strictly speaking, you don’t need your wisdom teeth and you will be able to cope just fine without them, so extraction can save you a lot of unnecessary pain.

The procedure

Wisdom tooth extraction is essentially very similar to normal tooth extraction, in that the tooth is loosened in the socket and then pulled out using specially designed dental instruments; however, it is often complicated by the location of the tooth and the angle it is positioned at and in this case, expertise is required. Our highly trained dentists have experience in oral surgery and will do all they can to remove your tooth with the minimum amount of fuss. We can offer sedation for extraction procedures if you are feeling nervous and we are on hand to offer advice after the procedure. It is normal to experience mild pain after extraction and we recommend taking over the counter pain relief.

Why White Fillings?

August 16th, 2016

429735_blogMercury-containing amalgam fillings were originally used to restore the tooth. At City Dental, we encourage you to have these traditional amalgam fillings replaced by white fillings.

White fillings are aesthetically-pleasing

White fillings that are made from dental composite or porcelain mimic natural tooth shade. When smiling, it is not obvious that any fillings are present. In contrast, amalgam fillings, which are made of metals, are noticeable to others.

When comparing white fillings and amalgam ones, white fillings are often pictured as weaker and less durable amalgam fillings. Although metal fillings placed in the back teeth for chewing power are stronger, white composite fillings offer a durable blend to restore tooth function, improve bite and enhance facial expression. Porcelain fillings may be used in the smile zone for a beautiful smile.

Treatment with white fillings

The benefit of having white fillings is that the fillings can be placed and set within minutes, allowing for immediate tooth restoration. Traditional amalgam fillings usually require longer treatment times and recovery as they do not include modern light activation materials and technologies. If you would like more information about our white fillings treatment please contact City Dental in central Leeds.

Weak Teeth Made Strong!

August 12th, 2016

18625044Tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the body, but it’s not completely invincible and the teeth can be damaged and broken. If you have an injury, are involved in an accident or have a decayed tooth, we can provide treatment to repair, protect and strengthen your teeth. Our dental crowns are built for style and strength and they will help to reduce the risk of further damage in the future.

About dental crowns

Dental crowns are restorations commonly used when a tooth is broken or damaged through injury or weakened by decay. If the cavity is too large for a filling or the tooth is fractured, it is beneficial to crown it to protect it, make it stronger and decrease the risk of more damage in the future.

Crowning a tooth involves placing a crown over the top of the tooth. For this reason, crowns are sometimes known as caps. With a crown in place, you can enjoy better function, especially when you chew or bite down on food, and a reduced risk of infection caused by decay spreading through the tooth.

Crowns can be made from various different materials and we often recommend ceramic crowns, as they match the shade of the tooth for a seamless look.

The procedure

Treatment involves two sessions. During the first appointment, we will prepare your tooth to remove the decayed tissue and shape it in preparation for the crown. We will then use dental putty to create an impression of the tooth and this will be sent off and used as a template by our highly trained dental technicians. When the new crown is ready, we will place it and secure it using strong dental adhesive.

Crowns are hard-wearing and they should last for around 10 years, provided that they are cared for well.

Improve Your Oral Health by Visiting a Hygienist

August 10th, 2016

297243_blogDental hygiene is the foundation of good oral health and we are delighted to offer clients a range of hygiene services with our highly qualified dental hygienist. Dental hygiene is important for a number of reasons and we highly recommend regular hygiene sessions.

Why is oral hygiene so important?

Oral hygiene is important for both your oral and general health. Taking good care of your teeth and gums will not only help to keep decay and gum disease at bay, but it will also reduce your risk of several medical conditions. According to recent research studies, gum disease increases the risk of a host of health problems, including strokes, heart disease and diabetes.

Good oral hygiene helps to keep your mouth clean and free from harmful bacteria. Teeth cleaning and flossing also keep your teeth and gums looking glossy and healthy and ensure that your smile looks bright and attractive, which will increase your confidence and self-esteem.

Hygiene services are designed to boost oral health, but they also improve the look of your smile. Intensive cleaning can remove surface staining and give your smile a gorgeous, healthy glow.

Which services are available?

Dental hygienists work closely with dentists to treat and manage gum disease and provide oral health education and advice to ensure that people have the knowledge to take responsibility for their oral health.

Services available at City Dental in Leeds include scale and polish, oral health and lifestyle advice, bad breath treatment and gum disease management. Preventative dental treatments are also available.

We recommend combining a six monthly check-up with a hygiene session for the best oral health. Check-ups enable your dentist to identify and treat any problems as early as possible and a hygiene session will ensure that you leave the practice with beautiful, sparkling pearly whites, fresh breath and a clean bill of oral health.

Enlighten Your Smile with Teeth Whitening

August 8th, 2016
Beautiful young lady smiling

Who wouldn’t want to have a perfect smile?  We all remember the way our teeth used to positively sparkle when we were younger.  But with the passing years it is inevitable to lose that sheen.  Just like the way our hair can begin to lack its youthful sheen, teeth can become dull or even stained.  This is not something that just has to be accepted and whitening procedures are available if you want to have that perfect smile again.

Teeth whitening procedures can now be carried out mainly by you at home, for greater convenience.  Enlighten teeth whitening is one such method and it has become extremely popular in the United States.  This is largely because it is able to restore teeth to B1, which dentists term as the whitest possible shade for teeth to be.  No matter how stained or dull your teeth have become, Enlighten teeth whitening can rectify the problem.

How does it work?

Special trays are constructed by your dentist to ensure that there is a really close fit and the whitening gel applied to them can work on your teeth.  You will wear the trays every night for two weeks before an appointment with your dentist, which should last about 40 minutes.  Wearing the trays once a night will help to maximise the results of Enlighten teeth whitening, but the main treatment is over in just a fortnight.

The Importance of an Oral Cancer Screening

August 4th, 2016

585804_blogWhen thinking about cancer, many forget about the dangers of oral cancer and even more forget that your dentist should be the first stop to diagnosis the disease.

About oral cancer

Oral cancer usually starts off in the mouth as a small spot or sore. These are commonly white or red and can be located in any part of the mouth. If untreated, these sores can affect any area of your mouth, including your gum tissues, tongue, palate, lips and lining of the cheeks. Oral cancer also occurs more regularly in people who smoke and if you combine this with consumption of alcohol, you greatly increase your risk of developing the disease. Signs of oral cancer may include:

  • Colour changes in your oral tissue
  • Difficulty with chewing, speaking, swallowing or moving your jaw and tongue
  • Sores in the mouth that easily bleed and do not heal
  • Lumps or thickening rough spots
  • Small eroded areas in the mouth
  • Pain, tenderness or numbness on the lips and inside of the mouth

Oral cancer screening

By visiting your dentist more regularly you can significantly decrease your chances of suffering with oral cancer, as screenings are part of your routine dental examination. It is therefore important that you have regular full mouth check-ups, so your dentist can detect the early stages of cancer and treat it.  Some spots or sores located in the mouth may not be cancer, but it is always best to check just in case and your dentist will perform a brush test to ensure the sore or spot is not dangerous. If anything is found to be wrong with the sore then it will be removed in a separate procedure, but it is important to know that positive results from the brush test will be confirmed first by incisional biopsy and histology.

Remember, it is important to visit your dentist for an oral cancer check-up, as on average only half of those diagnosed with oral cancer will survive past five years. However, oral cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer if found at an early stage.
